    Summary

Eight years have passed since Blackwater, Saint Denis, and the fall of the van der Linde gang. The survivors are trying to make a life for themselves – some moving on to nobler pursuits, some circling back like carrion birds to the scores they left behind.

And outside a town called Purgatory, West Elizabeth, a man wakes up without a scrap of memory or a name, haunted by a black wolf and a golden stag.

    Summary

    John should’ve left already.

He willed himself to go. Get up, get moving. Would be so easy to gather his feet under him. Hell, there was a horse grazing in eyeshot, one of many they’d shot the Pinkerton off the back of. No Old Boy, but still. He could ride down to Copperhead Landing, no fuss. Gather Abigail, Jack, get the hell out of New Hanover.

He couldn’t leave Arthur. The thought settled in his stomach like a weight, tethering him to the ground below him.

John forces Arthur to keep on living. Even acts of love come with consequences.

    Summary

A wholesome series in which Arthur Morgan and John Marston are living safely together, and very much in love, on their own homestead. Growing their own crops, breeding horses, and making their own way. No explanation as to how or why, they just are.

    Second epilogue added

Arthur Morgan followed his own advice and left the gang when he had a child (the canonical Eliza and Isaac), taking up as a bounty hunter. Along the way he picked up a young John Marston, who thus never runs with Dutch. Despite leaving, Arthur never truly left his connections behind him, and when Dutch asked for help, he always answered. In 1899, during the event of the game, this arrangement might eventually force Arthur to choose to whom he truly owes his loyalty.

John sneered. "You think I'd protect Dutch Van der Linde? Believe me, if I knew where he was, I'd tell you. Hell, I'd go get him myself. He's worth 10 large right now."

Milton sneered right back. "I am not a fool, Mister Marston, kindly do not treat me as one. You would do nothing without Arthur Morgan's say-so, and that will be what puts you on the gallows right beside him."

    Summary

“Did you — well, did you want to at all?”

A few weeks before, Charles would have never asked that sort of question. Of anyone, really. Now, though… There was something about sweating everyday, about being stranded in flat country with friends he thought long gone. It had loosened his tongue, loosened the knot in his chest a bit as well.

John shook his head in response, mouth curling up at one side.

“I always use that excuse because I always mean it.” He scratched at his neck. “Except now I ain’t so sure I’ve got a wife.”

Charles expected John to look sad at that, but that half-smile, boyish and teasing, didn’t drop.

    ----

Set in the epilogue, centered around John and Charles' relationship. Enjoy!

    Summary

Arthur thinks of Hosea saying that the pencil should be guided by love; that looking at a thing is not the same as seeing a thing, and that this is the difference between a hack job and a man with any real modicum of talent. Arthur thinks about how inextricably his loyalty, faith and love are all tangled up together inside his heart, and he draws John’s portrait up in the tree as faithfully as he can, faithful enough even to remember the bits of twigs stuck fast in his wild black mop of dirty hair.

This is the first time Arthur thinks that he loves John.

    Summary

Arthur is so goddamn beautiful, flames shining in his eyes, mouth wet with whiskey. He palms the stray drops away with the back of his hand, busted knuckles scraping over a split lip.

John stares with his heart in his throat and his guts tied in knots, liquor making everything soft around the edges. Arthur catches his gaze for a moment, smiling wider and rolling his eyes at whatever Bill was rambling about before looking away. He pulls out a cigarette, striking a match on the bottom of his boot. Lifts it to his lips and lights it, tossing the spent match into the campfire, lips pursing around the end as he takes a drag. The cherry flares, and fades; John feels wild.

He can’t stop watching. Thinks of Arthur cleaning his gun. Arthur picking a lock. Sketching in the pages of his journal, lost in the lines; good with his hands, so intent. John thinks about what it’s like to be on the other end of focus, Arthur’s eyes narrowed as he cleans blood off of John’s face, ready to stitch him back together.

He’s never more real than when Arthur is looking at him that way; like he is all that matters.

    Summary

" I ain't catchin' a cold for this. And neither are you, can't afford it, clothes off. "

It isn't request and yet, something about the words rolling off his tongue made him glad for the darkness cast over his body, the chill settled in his body and the red-orange glow of the flames to play off of the rosettes spiraling in the highs of his cheekbones. What a fool, a fool, a fool. Why was this so difficult?-

" If you wanted me to take my clothes off, you coulda' just asked nicely. "

    Excuse me?
