And here’s the thing. If Buck was paying just a little more attention, he probably would’ve clocked what the pain in his middle meant a lot sooner. It wouldn’t change the outcome, sure, but he’d at least be ahead of the curve.
The worst part is that it’s all rather obvious in retrospect, because the signs are all there. The flickering lights. The gymnasium air rippling and warping like heat off pavement. The dark patches on everyone’s suits and dresses.
He should’ve seen it.

Eddie Diaz wants nothing to do with the paranormal. He would be perfectly happy if the spirits of the world stopped showing themselves altogether, actually. But when Adriana and Sophia come to town to film on location for their popular YouTube ghost hunting channel and the ghosts in Eddie's life start becoming much more loud and frequent, he gets roped into figuring out just why things in the Los Angeles spiritual world are changing, and not for the better. The children are crying, and Eddie might be the only one who can hear them.
A, hopefully, spooky story featuring a reluctant psychic, sibling bonds, quite a bit of paranormal activity, a blossoming romantic relationship, and a mystery that's begging to be solved.

“Did you know if you put a frog in water and slowly bring it to boiling, it won’t hop out?” Chris is chattering as Buck makes a quick dinner while Eddie argues with his gas company on the phone. He can hear the occasional swear word in Spanish as his voice raises. Eddie doesn’t like to raise his voice around Christopher – the very thought makes Buck want to kiss him full on the mouth – so he decided to take it to the living room while Chris sits with his homework in the kitchen and Buck cooks.
“Hmm?” Buck asks, unable to fully pull himself out of Bobby’s baked mac and cheese recipe. It took him years, but he finally convinced the man to write it down. Bobby’s handwriting was juvenile at best on a good day, but this was nearly unreadable. Buck wonders if he did that on purpose. “Frogs?”
“Yeah!” Chris states. “My teacher said that if you put a frog in a pot, you have to make sure it’s not immediately boiling. You put them in water and then slowly raise the temperature and they won’t realize what’s happening. Then once they realize, they have no place to go. They can’t jump out.”

The thing is, it’s not actually super pleasant, since that evening on his couch, to be around Buck. It’s not fun. For a month, being around the person who once made him feel safest has felt more akin to walking on eggshells. Eddie… Well, if Eddie wanted an easy, fun baseball watching experience, he could very well ask Chim or Bobby. Not that he ever does. But he could. They’d say yes, he’s confident. Maybe not to the Phillies. Dodgers for sure.
So, it’s not that Eddie thinks this evening is going to be the most fun he’s ever had. He’s certain it’ll be tense, and Buck will have mood swings, and probably say something vaguely shitty to Eddie at least once. But that’s just going to have to be okay. Because Buck spent countless miserable days at Eddie’s after the shooting, or when he had a mental breakdown, where Eddie was in pain and short-tempered. And Buck never abandoned him, not once.
Eddie will never abandon Buck. Not for a second.

Most of the results are lists of TV shows and movies and books about time loops, some that he even recognizes; useless. He tries to read an article about the real life physics of it but only makes it a few words in before he realizes he’s too drunk to understand paradoxes or words like conundrum.
Finally, he returns to his roots and opens the Wikipedia page. Time loops, he reads, reset when a certain condition is met, such as a death of a character, and then tries not to throw up the bar nuts he’s been scarving down.
It’s a bit to breathe when he closes the tab and orders something way too sugary with way too much booze, specially requesting a twisty crazy straw to absently sip through while he texts Ravi.

He thinks going back to sleep will be near impossible, but he has a shift in five hours and he can hardly afford to be late or useless because he didn’t sleep. He grabs two bags of sleepytime tea and catches the kettle just as it begins to whistle. He watches the water fill the mug, a steady stream that wafts the smell of chamomile into the air. He dunks the bags a few times and wraps the strings around the handle of the mug and turns to head to the couch. He hopes the tea in combination with late night Bob Ross might soothe him into something close to a dreamless sleep.
He barely manages a step forward, startling so hard that he drops the mug, as he faces towards the living room.
He’s surrounded.
The room is packed from the corner behind the television all the way up the loft where his bed is. Children and adults with dead eyes, drenched and dripping, covered in scars and bruises, some bloated and others wrapped in seaweed.
“Jesus.” Buck says, stumbling backwards into the refrigerator.
