Summary
“You are being gentle with him.”
Essek stills his hand on Frumpkin’s back, arching a questioning eyebrow. Frumpkin looks over his shoulder in indignant protest, but before he can so much as merp, Caleb has scooped him into his lap. The cat’s eyes fall closed with contentment as Caleb takes his face in both hands and rubs his thumbs in firm circles.
“Cats are not so fragile,” he explains. “They like a little bit of-- here.”
And then Caleb reaches out and takes his hand, and Essek is afraid to breathe.

Summary
Caleb and Essek are fleeing, separated from the Mighty Nein.
Desperate and almost beaten, Caleb grabs a trinket and his friend and Teleports them to safety. Except the destination they land in is not the one he had chosen.
And for a second he wonders whether he sent himself to hell.

Hard read, but so lovely and poignant, and filled with lots of little special moments amidst the tension and anxiety. I always wished Caleb would have had the chance to grieve his past like this, so I'm glad he got it here.

Summary
“Allow me to make it up to you?” Essek heard himself ask, suddenly too soft, too genuine, all without his permission.
Caleb cocked his head to the side just so, his eyes searching, lips caught parted halfway to whatever he’d been about to say before those words came tumbling out of Essek’s mouth. “How do you suggest?” he asked, that low, faintly rasping quality returning to his voice, his eyes catching the shifting light beautifully.
What had he just told Caleb about the dangers of acting on impulse? Essek swallowed, his mouth dry suddenly. He held his hand out to Caleb, not trusting himself to speak. Wordlessly, a smile flickering at his lips, Caleb took his hand. Essek pulled him up to his feet.

Summary
Essek Theylss considers himself a lucky man, but not by his own hand. There were many threads he did not control, and it must have been by some great miracle that they wove together into a rope that pulled him finally out of the darkness.
That miracle brought him here, to a Nicodrani beach at sunset, where one Caleb Widogast has fallen asleep in his lap.
