    He clocked the angle before the hit even landed; Marlow coming in too hot, too fast, shoulder high. Shane turned and slowed at the wrong moment, skates clipping, balance gone.

    Impact.

    The sound carried oddly through the arena, duller than boards, sharper than ice. Shane went down hard, helmet skidding, body twisting. And then it all happened at once. Skates tangled. Marlow stumbled over him as he fell, too. A skate’s blade flashed too close, too sharp.

    Shane's injuries during the Boston/Montreal game are much more life-threatening than in canon. Ilya's quick thinking and bone-deep instincts are the only reason he survives.

How can he when it has been trapped in his own heart so long. Neither of them know what the next year will bring. There is so much time before Ilya can have his agent, or his future agent, he will need a new one with no connections to Russia, reach out to Ottawa and hope that they’ll be interested in a future Hall of Fame center. The one thing Ilya is certain of is that he will do everything in his power to make their plan work. He spent his entire adult life lusting after, and then pining for Shane with his whole heart.

    “I will call.” Ilya reaches for the hand Shane has left on the gearshift and threads his fingers through his. He wants to say so much, but he has always been better with touch than words, especially when the only shared language was English. “We will talk every day.”

Most things are from the show but the timeline is a mix of both; Hunter and Marleau are aged up per the show instead of as young as they are in the books.     After the night has started to die down and most of the players had returned to their kitschy hotel, Scott, Shane, Carter, Luke, and Ilya decide on one last drunken/tipsy toast to bookend the season. As they go to leave, a fan around Luke’s age approaches them and nervously gushes that his best friend (and roommate) is the world’s biggest Admirals fan and wants to know if he can get their autographs for him.

    The Admirals do him one better, they all cram into some poor guy’s Uber XL and wake up his roommate at 3AM.

This Lily seemed genuinely worried, and if a phone call would get her a better read on the girl, that would be a coincidence at best. Shane knew she preferred talking on the phone, and if she used her own phone, she’d avoid invading any more of his privacy.

    She figured his current condition would be a higher priority to address than his mother calling the girl he was seeing. He’d be satisfied that his Lily would know how he was doing, and Yuna would be satisfied to connect with this girl who seemed to enchant his serious and stoic son. The phone rang twice before Yuna was sent to voicemail.

    "Hi. This is Ilya. I will never listen to your voicemail."

    Yuna may have miscalculated.

Shane sweeps his gaze over his former team, uses his disappointed-Captain-voice and feels a smidge of smugness when it clearly hits them as it always has.
