He had seen Israel move, fast and lithe, a dancer in motion, getting between Stede and the sword of the Dutch sailor intent on killing him. Stede should have seen it, should have sidestepped that sword easily, Izzy had taught him how so many times, and yet he had been distracted.

The first time it happens is unexpected.
He’s a few months shy of sixteen, not that the press gang had cared. Or maybe Britain is just desperate, if they’re impressing the likes of him. He’s shorter than most other boys his age, skinny and underfed and a little too weak to be good at anything. He’s spent his first week aboard a Navy vessel fumbling around and irritating the more experienced sailors with his inability to be of any use. He hopes privately that he’ll end up useless enough that they drop him off at the next port. Better to be penniless and alone in a foreign land than useless and dead on a Navy ship, in his opinion.
Or, five times Izzy deals with his seasickness alone, and one where he doesn't.

Izzy survives his bullet to the gut by the skin of his teeth. During his convalescence in the dilapidated shack on the outskirts of the wrecked Republic, Ed takes some time to reflect – but, still grappling with the way he and Izzy have hurt each other, instead deflects blame onto Stede, reasoning that Stede's plan was what got Izzy shot to begin with.
Izzy quickly gets fed up with Ed giving Stede the silent treatment, and takes matters into his own hands to make them see eye to eye.

On the one-month anniversary of whatever the fuck they’d now become, Stede had Buttons track down a luxury vessel, ordered Jim to hold their captain at knife-point, and politely asked Wee John to move his oversized bed into their quarters. Izzy oversaw Black Pete’s installation of the new addition while Ed made fun of Stede’s process—Is it really a gift if everyone else is doing the work, mate? The end result was the same though. After a day’s hard labor and some lighthearted squabbling, they finally had a bed big enough for three.

Ed didn't move except to prop his hands behind his head, seeming to give Izzy free rein to do as he pleased. Izzy wasn't fooled though. He'd been given a specific task and any deviation from it, even when Ed was this relaxed, would only end badly for them both. Oh, Izzy wanted it to end badly. They weren’t like the men who could lean shoulder-to-shoulder on cold nights, or shared hammock space easy as sharing a flask. The crack of Ed's fist was the most Izzy could hope for and if he was lucky, truly blessed for a night, Ed would strip off his gloves and land the blow against Izzy's cheek—not a single bit of leather between them.
For a moment, Izzy considered doing something to stoke that rage... until he realized it wasn't necessary.
The smoke must have been getting to him too. Ed's pants-leg was still drawn up above his knee, bare skin glittering like gold.
