Two days.
Shane and Rozanov filming together, surrounded by the CCM filming and design team, none of them aware that their star rivals were secretly fucking every chance they could. That every game the world saw them go head-to-head in was only foreplay, leading to apartments and hotel rooms. That the heated rivalry between them was inching further and further away from rivalry, and toward something entirely different.
Two days in sunny, perfect Florida.
Or, a joint CCM shoot set in sunny, perfect Florida gets derailed by a natural disaster, and Shane and Ilya are forced to spend actual time together, forced to imagine a future. They find that it’s quite impossible to reason with hurricane season, but that the effects are better than they could have hoped for.

“There is nothing to be sorry for, любовь моя, it is okay,” Rozanov murmurs, tugging at Shane’s hair again. Shane exhales, letting him clean his cheeks. “You got overwhelmed, yes? It happens.”
“I can’t be fucking normal,” Shane says quietly, whining, head falling back, pressing into Rozanov’s hand.
“No, if you were fucking normal, you would not be my Shane.”

Maybe if the video ended there, Shane thought, it would be okay. Okayish. Still incriminating. Still a fucking disaster. Still embarrassing, to have his breakup with this beautiful actress filmed and disseminated on Reddit of all fucking places, but not a nail in his coffin, burying him alive. But the video didn’t end there.
“Can I ask if you’ve ever been with another guy?” she had to ask.
And he, tears visible in his eyes, had to nod.
Just once. Just a single nod.
Why did he have to nod?
“Have you ever told anyone that before?” He shook his head. “Was it different? With a guy?”
“Of course.”

“Was it better?”
“Yes.”

Shane’s conversation with Rose is secretly recorded. Months later, after the All-Star game and Ilya’s confession in Russian, the video gets leaked online. Shane is outed to the world while Ilya is in Russia, and must now finish the 2016-2017 season with the entire world in on his secret.

The next day at practice, he was sure everyone could tell. He felt wobbly on his skates, unsteady like he hadn’t been in years. Not since early childhood.
“You good?” Hayden asked when they sat down together for a water break. “You seem off.”
Shane hoped he hadn’t noticed him wincing. “Yeah, my uh, my back kinda hurts.” It wasn’t entirely a lie: his lower back did feel tight, in addition to everything else. “I think I just slept weird or something. I’ll be fine.”
“Go see Dr. Whitaker if you still feel bad tomorrow. Gotta be in good shape by game time, right?” Hayden asked, patting his shoulder affectionately. He looked worried, which made Shane feel fleetingly guilty.
“If I do, I’ll go see him, but I’m sure I’ll be fine. I am fine. Promise,” he said, then leaned over so they could knock their helmets together like always. For friendship, for good luck.
“Okay,” Hayden said, sounding unconvinced.
He played well the next day - better than usual, even.
He could feel the lingering ache of Ilya inside him for the entire game.
Or: a series of ways and times Ilya left a lasting impression on Shane.

Too bad he couldn't.
