Summary
Rocky emerges, and his body language alone is enough to get me going. I struggle around my laugh, clamping my hand over my mouth. He waits patiently for me to gather myself.
“Eridians are gay,” he declares. “I escape closet for all of them.”
I fail. I tuck my glasses into the collar of my shirt so I can put my head in my hands, wiping tears as they come.
“Rocky,” I say between giggles, “Rocky, I don’t think—I don’t think you can apply human sexuality to Eridians.”
Something in him shifts, then. He perks to attention from his relaxed state, and though he has no eyes or facial features, I swear I can feel his gaze narrow on me.
“I also read about gay rights,” he says slowly, warily. “Read that gay humans are hated some places. Bad.” He comes closer, looking up at me with all the accusation his flat face can muster. “You hate gay, question?”

"Singing a courtship song to Grace while ey falls asleep has become part of their nightly ritual. It is different than singing with Adrian; when they sang to each other, their voices joined in harmony, and the song resonated with their mutual pleasure. But Grace is human. Ey has no concept of what the song means between Eridians, and no way of singing the song back to Rocky, even if ey wanted to. There is no harmony here, merely a one-way message of love that Grace is incapable of sending back.
Still, a one-way message is better than none. And the way that Grace’s muscles relax during each night’s song, eir body limp and at ease, is a message in its own way."

The oldest Entity is 17,000 years old and the youngest is 1,000."
"You guys have reincarnation??"

"It's a belief that when a person dies, they're reborn in a new body to live a whole new life. There's no evidence of it though, it's just one belief system among many."
"Yes, like that. It's only for Entities though, not every Eridian. They moult their old carapace, and grow a new one from the materials surrounding them in their grave. That is why it is very important to pick the best materials when building a grave."

After 27 years, Earth's Hail Mary comes through. The world has been forever changed, and billions died because of the Astrophage crisis, but space agencies have done their best to survive and keep their telescopes pointing to Tau Ceti. After the beetles are spotted, Eva Stratt forces her way into the CSA office to learn what the Hail Mary crew discovered. Downloading the data is slow and happens in pieces, so the team has to try piecing together what happened out in the Tau Ceti system.
Eva Stratt is faced with the reality of what she did to Grace, watching him deal with the situation she put him in, leading to a complex mix of emotions. Part of her wishes things could have been different. But she knows that wishing on a star is useless.

It's difficult to be upset at them because, to be fair, I did agree to make that stupid secret pact with the rest of the Hail Mary crew that we all wouldn't attempt to initiate a romantic relationship with Grace.

Rocky hums. "Why have so much available on mission, question? Seems dangerous."
"Remember when I said the Hail Mary was never intended to return home?" Rocky whistles an affirmative for courtesy's sake. I know he can't forget. "Part of the provisions was offering the astronauts a means of dying on their own terms."
Rocky learns that the Hail Mary was a suicide mission in every sense of the word. Grace reckons with his role as the messenger of mercy.

The endless glug-thud-squelch of Ryland Grace's body seemed very loud in the small room. He made a noise that sounded like, "Huh?"
"Grace and Adrian talk now," Rocky commanded. They pointed one arm at them. "Talk until both normal."
"What?" Adrian said, baffled.
Rocky clattered several claws against the ground, a discord of pique. "You are both annoying! Always polite, polite, polite. Bland. Empty."In which Adrian and Grace haven't really been getting along, and Rocky takes matters into his own claws.

A middle school science teacher who gave everything for his kids, and it still wasn't enough. What did they expect from him here? The rest of the crew was dead; he was a man abandoned in the void. He understood Stratt's actions, even though he hated every second of it.
Alternatively, Ryland Grace remember everything.
