Summary
In the dream, he’s in the subway.
This is not the first time Dokja has dreamt of the subway, nor will it be the last. Time after time, night after night, he’s returned here: the subway crammed full of people, the subway empty and devoid of life, the subway with the monster raising a blade over his head. Sometimes it’s in the car; sometimes it’s in the station. But it always stays the same.
He blinks, and then someone is sitting across from him.
The Oldest Dream meets the Han Sooyoung of their new worldline.

He finds a copy of his mother’s book on the shelf in his room. How did he not notice it before?

“Is this what you wanted to know about me?”
Yoo Joonghyuk’s hands pause from where he is reordering books on their bookshelf in the living room. Slowly, he turns to glance down at the book, then back up to meet Kim Dokja’s eyes. They're as dark as the water rolling against the shore at night, reflecting the light of the lamp the way the waves reflect the moon. “No,” he says in that calm, unwavering tone of his. “It isn't.”

Summary
And something about being showered with love upon his return just doesn’t sit well on his conscience. But isn’t that hilarious? He, who scammed his way through so much of the scenarios to get what he wanted, is feeling a little out-of-sorts because, in a way, all of this is a scam too.
They wanted Kim Dokja.
They wanted the Kim Dokja who they fought with side-by-side, who they fought for when he could no longer, who they fought against when he played the villain for them; yet now even on his best days, he can only get out of bed with the help of two pairs of hands and manage ten or so steps with a walker before he’s out of breath and his heart rate goes crazy from the stress.
But what they got is just a messed-up, sad version of him.
They fought through worldlines and re-lived the scenarios in order to get him — all of him — back, so Kim Dokja thinks it's only fair that he do his part to return them the companion they so longed for. But even on his good days, he can fight off the exhaustion for only so long.
He just simply isn't what he used to be.

Summary
Till takes in a shaky breath, and the physical absence of a familiar weight on his shoulders throbs like an open wound in the hollow space between his lungs.
It’s always been Ivan’s role, to chase after Till until he got too tired to run away, constantly orbiting around him, unbearably close. Till’s fingers feel numb all of a sudden, the screen of his phone darkens under his turbulent gaze—his legs tremble, just slightly. But he’s getting quite tired of running in circles.
Before the fear can get the better of him, Till taps on the keyboard and hits send.
‘hey, r u coming back home for the break?’
Every chase must eventually reach its end. The question is: what do you want its ending to be?

Summary
Yoo Joonghyuk wondered for a delirious moment if perhaps Kim Dokja would be able to understand if he told him about the millenia he spent in limbo, drifting in nothingness, flitting through a million universes that weren’t his. He wondered if Kim Dokja had ever felt something as profoundly and soul-achingly empty as eternity.
There are many things Yoo Joonghyuk can’t recall anymore. But one thing he knows is that he lost someone, once. Someone he drifted in eternity for. Someone he searched the infinite sky for. Someone that still haunts him even after he returns to Earth.
Days turn to weeks turn to years. Life goes on. Then one spring morning, he meets a stranger.

Summary
There is always a cycle in life. The past repeats itself, whether in reality or in the form of a black haze in his head. Trauma can never disappear, is what they say. It sticks with you, a parasite that drains your blood until a quiet, cold corpse is all that is left. A parasite that whispers into his ears, digs into his bones, and leaves blistering marks that burn.

Summary
"I will meet you for the first time in less than three weeks," Yoo Joonghyuk continues, resting his elbows against the table with a terrifyingly grave expression on his face. "I won't let that happen this time."
Kim Dokja doesn't know why he's suddenly taking this seriously. This stranger is probably out of his mind, and Kim Dokja has no reason to listen to him. Still, he finds himself gripping the hem of his shirt as he leans forward to ask, "Why?"
Yoo Joonghyuk's expression twitches then, faltering in the moonlight. "Because I’m going to kill you," he answers, and his voice is so broken that it makes Kim Dokja want to cry too.
"Who are you?"
“The man you were going to fall in love with," Yoo Joonghyuk says. "And the worst thing that ever happened to you."

Summary
It hadn’t been a big deal, Kim Dokja had thought, when he started feeling a little under the weather. It’d just been a sneeze. A cough. Maybe a bit of a runny nose. It still wasn’t a big deal when he’d gotten the fever later. These things happen. It’s not like he’s spent how-ever-many years taking care of himself and somehow never run into a cold. He’s made it work, dragged himself to work, and has done so multiple times over the course of his life. Shocker of shockers, he’s never died even once throughout this entire process. He can take care of himself.
Kim Dokja’s Company doesn’t seem to think so.

Four years later, his old friends and family, still searching for him, uncover clues that lead them to this hidden world.

Summary
Kel knew he ought to be more grateful, because if there was anything spending so much time in Senema Hospital’s Oncology Ward had taught him, it was that there were too many people out there who’d do anything for just one more birthday. But he was in so much pain—up his left side, his chest and upper back, his neck. The only time he was pain-free was when he was deep in the mire of his subconscious, where he could be twelve years old again, cancer such a foreign concept that he didn’t even really know what it was.
(Kel is sick, and no one knows how to deal with it.)

What do you see in me?
Sunny once asked, in the future, stuttered through chapped lips in a moment of delirium.
The universe. The sky, the moon, and the stars. I see the world, one I long to hold. I see everything that I’ve ever wanted, and something beyond what I can grasp. I see sanctuary and happiness. I see you. I see Sunny.
Kel replied, in that same future, words escaping before he could clench his teeth and swallow his true, unrelenting feelings.

Summary
“Where would we have gone, anyway?” Till is unable not to ask. The desert comes with a sky that’s all but fake; framed by the sharp corners of the vehicle is an endless sea of bright scarlet, scarred and stitched up by falling tears of gold and swirling nebulas. Till remembers running. In that hallucinating haze, he cannot phantom a good enough reason to dig his heels in and stop. “We pass that glitch in the gates to get out, and we run — and then what?”
Ivan hums. His clothes are a confusing bundle — the too-long pants from the Garden, the rain-soaked jacket from the stage. His fringe is scarlet wet, plastered against his forehead.
“Who knows,” he offers.
or: Till leaves Round 7 on his own feet. The rest is consequential.

I turn back to the stove to watch the eggs cook. “So, I wanted to ask, is there anyone coming over today to celebrate?”
He laughs. Laughs. Like the very idea is ludicrous.
“Don’t be silly Mom,” he says. “No one wants to come to my party, and even if they did, they'd be the laughing stock of the school. I understand perfectly! I would never do that to anyone. I'll just decorate my own small cake and eat it by myself.”
Oh.
And here I thought “it breaks my heart” was poetic license. My chest hurts so badly I can hardly breathe.
“Rui…” my husband says.
“Don’t worry, Dad, really!” Rui’s voice is so insistent I almost fall for it. Our son is a talented little actor in his own right. Rui scratches the back of his neck. “Actually, truly, please don’t worry. It hurts more when you pity me.”
Then, he heads back to his room.Snapshots of the various birthdays of Kamishiro Rui, as seen through his mother's eyes.
