Summary
Jayce sits up, ready to greet his partner with some quip about how much the party sucked, but the words die in his throat when he realizes that Viktor is not alone. He is—very much not alone. The low light from the lamppost spills inside and across two bodies. Hushed voices and a low laugh, the under-oiled creak of the door hinge as someone taller and broader than Viktor presses him up against the closing door, leans down and kisses him on the mouth.
Oh, Jayce thinks dumbly.
Or: A plumbing issue-turned-home-renovation leaves Jayce crashing on Viktor's couch for the foreseeable future. In that time, Jayce learns some new things about his partner. And his partner's various hobbies.

Partners, Jayce calls them. Not for the first time, Viktor wonders: Partners in what?

It is an old saying in Zaun— If they’re mean, they want a fight. If they’re clever about it, they want to fuck. If they do both, you’re in for a good night.
His approach to attraction is a cultural habit, one Viktor has never given much thought to because it has always been true. No one in Zaun flirts openly. They play, they provoke, they get under the skin. And if a partner snaps back just as sharp—well. That’s interest.
Piltovans as a whole don’t seem to understand this. They flirt in ways that are too clean, too direct, too painfully earnest. They go soft first, then ask permission to go softer.
Jayce is a Piltie. He does not have the stomach for the game.
At The Piltover Conservatory, the most prestigious and selective academy in the arts world, talent is everything.
After a disastrous first meeting, Jayce writes Viktor off as caustic, unimpressed, and apparently allergic to basic conversation.
In a twist of academic misfortune, they’re assigned to work together on a project that means months of high-stakes rehearsals and performances. Working together isn’t optional.
But music is built on tension, and dissonance isn’t always meant to be resolved.

Meanwhile, patients in Zaun are lucky if they know someone with an intact midwifery license, and even that doesn’t matter when their placental abruption happens at two in the morning and they can’t afford the ambulance.”
Jayce rubs a hand over his face. “Yeah. I mean, I’ve never been to a gynecologist either, but that’s more of a gender crisis thing than a crunchy trad-Pilt thing. You get it.”
He says it lightly, a snort or a roll of Viktor’s eyes expected.
But Viktor just goes very, very still.

Summary
Viktor's band is headlining one of the largest music festivals in the city, but gets the paramedics called on him for fainting before his set. Jayce is the paramedic looking after him, who decides to stick around for the show to make sure Viktor is truly as okay as he claims. Jayce ends up getting the show of his life. Afterwards, Viktor is more than happy to invite Jayce home, smoke a little weed, and relax together (frot expeditiously).

(In life, Viktor had a voracious sweet tooth and an affinity for over-steeped tea. After his resurrection via hexcore, he wakes with a…different sort of appetite.)

But Jayce doesn’t seem the type to want Viktor’s ire. Something about his expression, so open until now, is guarded — wounded. Viktor squares himself and makes a bold guess.

The energy between them snaps taught as piano wire. Jayce looks at Viktor with open wonder, his mouth falling open. It’s as if he’s been seen for the first time, though now that he’s said it Viktor finds the idea laughably obvious. A man who sought out someone whose life he could improve doesn’t do that for nothing. Viktor is so relieved to find something self-serving under Jayce’s idealism.
“I would,” Jayce says, his voice a strained whisper.

It is an incredibly frustrating thing, to have the knowledge of how to do something, without the practical skill needed to do so.
Viktor had tried several iterations of a new brace for his leg with what he had at his disposal, but all of them lacked the strength for true support, let alone longevity. This one had outlasted all the others at least, but had given out at what had to be the most inconvenient moment possible.
At least it is still mostly holding his weight, and he takes care to shift his cane tight to his hip to provide as much help as possible after he feels the give and bend of one of the bars. “Shit.”
Or: Viktor accidentally falls into a partnership with a blacksmith, after his leg brace breaks in the middle of the city.

Summary
The Man of Progress is a symbol and a carefully crafted illusion. Behind it, Jayce has been sinking. Until Viktor makes an offhand comment at a gala and the illusion completely shatters.
“Jayce,” Viktor says. “You’re bleeding.”
That makes sense, Jayce thinks, since he’d apparently just crushed a glass in his hand.
“You’re also not breathing,” Viktor notes. His voice is concerned now, and Jayce feels Viktor’s hand fall on his elbow.
Jayce nods, because that makes sense too. Or, no. It doesn’t make sense. He should be breathing. But Viktor is correct that Jayce is not.
