The Enterprise has been sent to negotiate reaccession to the Federation with an isolationist religious group known as the Kindred. While there, Jim notices that some of the children seem to be gravely ill. The problem is, the Kindred practice faith healing and refuse to allow a doctor to be brought in. So Jim does what he does best: he improvises.

A quick thanks to mydwynter who—although he may not remember this—helped me via chat one night think about pov in the first scene. I really enjoyed and learned from that conversation.
And I owe million thanks to Mazarin221b for the beta; she gave me lots of encouragement and some great ideas for the last scene. And then, when I was still getting stuck, I read and re-read her marvelous Hands Are Clever (one of my absolute favorites) until I finally was able to kick it into gear.
