The universe is a powerful, unpredictable, and all-seeing force.
It is the only thing, the only concept, the only force, that is everything that exists. Or well, it was.
Before the King.
The King was an error in the system. A deity that was never meant to be.
Originally, the king was kind. Humble. Forgiving. But years of power and knowledge that ultimately isolated him from the world turned his heart stone cold. After all, no king should rule without a queen.
Now, the King was a problem. An error. A mistake. Something so other that one couldn’t help but abhor it.
But there was a way for him to be gone. If the knowledge in him were to be canceled out, he would be gone.
However, no mortal was meant to take on the task alone.

Derek's jaw dropped. "You're kidding. There is no way that meeting me is more interesting than literally anything else you do." Derek didn't even know how to unpack the last bit of what Avery said.
"Nuh uh uh." Avery stuck his hand in Derek's face to wag his finger at him. Derek just scrunched his nose. "Buddy, trust me, you are the root of it all. You are why I'm here."
"That's…" Derek took in a shaky breath, deliberately and slowly letting it out. This was a fact Avery made obvious from the beginning, yet it was one he did not understand at all. "What do you mean by that?"
"It means," and oh, Avery is taking his hands now, grinning quite fondly, and the way the starlight glow washes over his proud expression makes it all look quite hazy, "my desire to save you broke the universe."
or: Derek and Avery get their sleepover. Derek has questions. Avery has very confusing, rambly answers. Derek considers it debatably awful exposition.
It's all in good fun.

Avery cleared his throat and pointed a finger gun at the yellow-tinged shadow. "I am the Loyal Guardian who fights for love and for justice! In the name of Derek, I'll enlighten you!"
"In the name of—why me??" hissed Derek.
As Avery held up the sword, charging up his final attack, he laughed again. Derek frowned, disregarding the heat the clung to his cheeks. Avery was just so weird and confusing (and... magical).
