Summary
Shadow tries not to feel too disappointed when he wakes up on Earth, in the middle of a large crater in a forest of evergreens, alive and in enough pain that his breath stutters in his chest.
He doesn’t get to die, he thinks, nearly reduced to tears as he stares at the blue sky and tries to remember how to breathe.
This is atonement. He doesn’t get to get away from his pain this easily.
Or; an exploration of Shadow's grief and guilt and fear.
Or; Shadow is no longer property, and he does not know what to do with this knowledge that feels more constricting than freeing.

Summary
Maria doesn’t mind Shadow being quiet.
When people talk, he looks up: at faces, at indicators of a command, a direction, guidance. He waits to be told what to do. Run on the treadmill; give a blood sample, squeeze the dynamometer; do a spinal tap. He’s got a voice, a memory lauded with languages, all the means and reasons to ask the what and the why.
They drain him, the researchers; yet, he doesn’t ask what for. Maybe somebody’s already told him. Or he overheard his purpose. He’s alive so she can stop dying too early, and that’s enough for a purpose for him, so he does as he’s told.
She tries to give him opportunities to just be her little brother, just do fun things with her, things that don’t hurt him. He’s always clueless what to do then. Mobian hedgehogs are a social species, much in the same way humans are. Shadow’s not very social.
She knows there’s a lot in his head that he won’t or can't say. It’s just how he is. She’s fine with that.

It is a little jarring, when that corruption finally leaves him. He’s not sure what truly does the trick, maybe that last little push from Sage, or just some little parting gift from what remains of the Ancients. Sonic isn’t sure. Whatever the case may be, his body cannot decide if he should cry, or pass out.
The same must be true for the rest of his friends, because as he casts a weary glance over them all, they look equally as strained. But Chaos, it is good to see them whole, well and truly whole. Though unscathed might not be an accurate term, for any of them.

"With each step forward, he basked in the ocean breeze against his cheeks. With each fight, he learned more about what he could do, things he’d never been capable of before. It was the delight of new horizons in front of him that kept him so hopefully persistent. Sonic doesn’t think he could ever get enough of that, no matter the circumstances.
But then there was that off feeling.
It only grew with each delve into cyberspace. Never quite painful or even a cause for much concern, but still undeniably there. Sonic reasoned that whatever he was feeling was a minor version of whatever Amy was experiencing. What she was enduring was certainly worse than these little snippets of something off. Still, the feeling made him feel slightly disconnected from his own body and mind. It was an expected side effect of entering Cyberspace. That’s how Sonic rationalized it at least."

Desperation fills his being as the sounds get louder, indicating that GUN is drawing closer. He can pick out human voices, detached and monotonous commands, ordering a thorough search of the area. He needs to leave now.
So Shadow reaches within himself, reaching for the remnants of his energy, trying to find somewhere, anywhere, to go. He tries to think of some place safe, something he knows.
A vivid image pops into his mind. One with deep blue quills, green eyes and the most hopeful smile he has seen in a long time. Shadow reaches for it, for him, and allows himself to be pulled away. The air crackles around him, and he can feel the world twisting, turning, and the greenery disappears with a snap.
Sonic, he thinks, and moves across the world, tethered by the only thing he still knows.
