Summary
TK and Carlos navigate their first holiday season with Jonah. From an advent calendar that's taller than he is to Nochebuena with the entire Reyes family, Jonah finds wonder and joy at every turn.
For Tarlos, it means reflecting on their own childhoods and choosing what parts they want to pass on to their little guy. With their family by their side – chosen and blood – TK and Carlos learn how to build a home out of joy, grief and a whole lot of love.

“You know,” Carlos said softly, brushing a smudge of dirt off Jonah’s cheek. “Bluebonnets always remind me of your TK.”
TK looked up sharply from behind his coffee mug. He’d never heard this one before.
“Why?” Jonah asked, eyes twinkling with delight.
“Well,” Carlos said, voice low like he was sharing a secret. “TK’s brave like the bluebonnets. He always keeps trying, even when it’s really hard. No matter what, he always chooses kindness. That’s what makes him so special. He blooms where he’s planted.”
“And," he added, winking playfully at TK. "He’s beautiful.”
“TK’s a brave flower,” Jonah whispered with enchantment.
“The bravest.” Carlos nodded. “He’s my favorite flower.”

Summary
When TK’s ex comes through Austin on tour, Carlos tells himself he’s not jealous. Not of the musician ex, not of the box of ticket stubs Owen’s been saving for a decade. Not even of the back catalogue of love songs that may or may not be about TK. But jealousy can turn tender, and along the way Carlos is reminded that TK’s wild heart was always going to lead him right here.

“Baby, it’s really cute that you’re jealous,” TK says with a squeeze to Carlos’s thigh. “But there’s not anything to be jealous of. I’m marrying you.”
He grunts in response and takes a moment to think it over, wanting to examine his feelings before responding. He knows it’s irrational, maybe even a bit petty, but...
“I thought I was the only boyfriend your dad liked.”
“What?” TK asks in amused surprise. “I never said that.”
Carlos feels his jaw tightening, rolls his shoulders back before saying, “It was implied.”

When Jonah gets in trouble at school, Carlos is called to meet the principal, who seems more flustered by him than he is about picking up his kid from the principal's office.

“Well, before we continue, I just have to ask…” She tilts her head, trying for effortless and playful. “Is there a Mrs. Strand Reyes?”
Carlos straightens in his chair, brow furrowing again, clearly confused by the direction in which this conversation is going.
“…No?”
Principal Hargrove lets out a little laugh.
“That’s too bad,” she says, voice slipping into what she thinks is a flirty tone. “I’m, um… I’m single too. Nobody’s ever had the cajones to try.” She actually sings the last part, dropping her voice into a low baritone and wiggling her eyebrows while pointing at her bare ring finger.
Carlos blinks.
Then he calmly lifts his left hand from Jonah’s shoulder, revealing the shiny gold band on his own ring finger.
“There is a Mr. Strand Reyes,” he says matter-of-factly.
Principal Hargrove’s eyes go saucer-wide. She actually hears the hollow thunk of the Windows crash error sound as her brain freezes. The system needs a reboot.
“Oh.”

Carlos cocks an eyebrow. “Oh, you’ve seen a lot of pornos.”
“Shut up,” TK says, uncrossing his arms so he can take the five extra steps to the dining table and dramatically drop down into his husband’s lap. He finally presses a kiss to those perfect lips, tasting the coffee Carlos’s been sipping and the cinnamon he brewed it with. Carlos immediately brings a hand to TK’s hip to support him while he runs the other up the back of his t-shirt.
“Hot guy with a tool belt,” TK continues, poking a finger into the dimple at the side of Carlos’s dopey grin. “Big hammer, looong measuring tape… offering to lay some pipe.”
“I believe I laid a decent amount of pipe last night,” Carlos deadpans.

Summary
Firefighter TK Strand and window washer Carlos Reyes first meet far above the Manhattan streets, with TK rescuing Carlos from the forty-fourth floor of the Chrysler Building before his safety line snaps. When Carlos seeks his hero out to thank him, TK is going through a nuclear-bad breakup and back living with a father who is deeply affected by 9/11. But by letting Carlos into his life, maybe it’s TK who will feel himself falling.
Or: What if Carlos was the window washer that TK saved in the Pilot? And what if Judd was with Owen on 9/11?
Sometimes, he can feel the phantom bruise of the Narcan on his thigh, the light of himself blinking chaotically before snapping back on, how he’d sobbed against his terrified dad. But that’s not all there is anymore. He can still feel Carlos clinging to him as he was lifted to safety. He can still feel Carlos inside him, from nights ago, the angle he found, the way he moved. He can feel Carlos kissing his shoulder.
And after.
He can feel the after.
Lying at the foot of the bed, spent and breathless, the weight of Carlos’ sleepy head in his naked lap, TK running his fingers through his curls.

TK and Carlos’ first wedding anniversary is approaching – and Carlos falls asleep during sexy time. An ill-fated first attempt at marriage counseling leads the husbands to remember other occasions when sex and sleep went wrong, yet ultimately brought them closer together. Maybe that will be the case this time, too. Especially if they nail the perfect anniversary gifts. (Coda for 5x05 - Thunderstruck).
TK has thought a few times lately that it would be much easier if he and Carlos were in a fight. Clear lines drawn, and Carlos being the one in the wrong, ideally. The one sleeping on the couch until TK comes to join him, because he can’t sleep without Carlos.
“Scooch over,” he’d demand.
Carlos would scooch, and he’d wrap TK up tightly from behind, saying, “Wouldn’t it be better if we’re both in bed, though?”
“No. Because you’re still banished to the couch.”
“But you’re on the couch too, now.”
“Shut up.”
They’d laugh about it, enter a tickle-wrestle, and kiss and kiss.
But they’re not fighting.

Summary
It’s the middle of the night, and TK and Carlos have to pick a devastated eight-year-old Jonah up from his first sleepover when a scary movie freaks him out a bit too much. Back in the safety of their home, the three of them have a sleepover of their own.
“Okay. Baby who is not a baby. Do you want Papa to come sit in the back with you while we drive?”
Carlos smiles at Jonah softly – a smile as if to say, “That’ll be fine with me.”
Jonah faces the window again. That was brief. “No,” he says, “No…just leave me here.”
TK and Carlos look at each other for a second before they have to look away, or they’ll crack up.
“We’re not having that,” Carlos tells him, opening his door and getting out. He hops into the backseat with his boy and reaches an arm around his shoulders.
Jonah doesn’t protest, partly because Papa Carlos is so warm.
“You’re warm,” Jonah tells him, and holds onto Carlos' wrist to keep him there.
