Laurent had been stuck at the police station for seventeen hours and fifty-six minutes.
Six hours and twenty-one of them had been spent sleeping with his back to the wall, curled up on the plastic-y, too-short couch in the office of the Special Victims Unit chief, trying to ignore the officers who peeked in periodically to make sure he was still breathing.
The other eleven hours and thirty-five minutes had been spend doing fuck all.
People in business-casual clothes with badges around their necks or on their hips or in their back pockets kept asking him if he was doing alright. He’d stopped answering them fourteen hours and twenty-nine minutes ago. One of them had brought him McDonalds, twice. Another had brought him a book from home.
It wasn’t really home anymore. It hadn’t been for a long time.

He plucked the hair and burned it over the flame of the lamp standing on his dressing table, going back to combing his hair with slow even motions until it shone.
If he spent extra time that night inspecting the rest of his locks for other traitorous signs of gray, then no one was around to see, or mention it.
