They say nobody returns from the ghastly, ruined city of Rennanis. Some people were unwise enough to test that rumour, to raid the city, and Madel Resistant Grebin was a reluctant part of that raid. She was one of the first to realise that the city wasn't abandoned, and the truth was far worse than the rumours ever could be.
Now she's dragged in front of something called Castrima Council to bargain for the lives of the remainder of her people, but here in this strange city, under the light of the new-born moon, nothing is quite what it seems.

Then he knocked at my door with two theatre tickets in his hand. I said no before he opened his mouth, then said no over and over with various and dubiously credible excuses attached, while he presented his rambling explanation of having gotten two tickets to a show months ago, to see with the wife, that it was expensive but it had her favourite singer in it so he thought it was worth it, he thought it would fix things, but it didn’t, and now he’s stuck with two tickets to a musical and nobody to take with him because obviously the wife left, his niece is too young for something like that, and none of his friends like musicals, none of them but me. I was trying to decide whether to clarify to him that we were not actually friends, but just then he stopped waving his arms around for long enough that I could read the title on the tickets. Oh shit. I couldn't miss that.
So I said yes. I told him I’d go before I figured out a way to walk back my excuses, which included a chronic health condition, a distant relative’s dog and a close relative’s funeral.

Gilgamesh Wulfenbach is a boringly normal petty baron's son, having a totally normal (boring) time at university in Paris with his wolfsister Bangladesh (not normal in the least.) (The wolf herself, not the fact that he has one at all. His father is one of the premier breeders in Europa, after all.)
Then he goes and falls for a duchess regnant (above his station) (kind of) (it's complicated.) with her own wolfsister (not even on the same continent as normal but amazing either way.)
She's so great he almost doesn't resent Prince Weasel for falling for her too. (Just kidding, he totally does.)

Then, slipping between Stormtroopers like a living shadow, another man appears.
He’s of modest height and slim build, clad in a black cloak with the hood pulled up over his head. The energy in the room instantly changes as he steps forward, becoming weighted and charged. There’s a sense of raw deference in the way everyone watches him. When the commander from earlier steps forward and tries to speak, the man raises a gloved hand to cut him off without looking, dismissing him as easily as one of the rank and file.
Din’s stomach bottoms out.
