“You’re not boning, though, right?” he says, suddenly. He doesn’t know why he feels such an urge to bring it up again, as if the thought of Mike boning is not something that is CODE RED #1 at the top of Will's list of things to absolutely never think about. But also. Look–
“What? No, of course I’m not boning,” Mike splutters, turning a violent shade of scarlet, “how would I even hide that from you, I’m with you all the time–”
And then he falls silent, so fast that Will gets tonal whiplash from how fast Mike just went from saying boning over and over again to just clamping his mouth shut and staring at the wall across from them.
Will's trying his hardest to make it through fall semester in one piece. Unfortunately for his degree, he's being haunted by maybe-feelings for his best friend (metaphorically), and also a maybe-ghost with rather abysmal fashion sense (literally).

Summary
Will moves back to an upright position, wiping his hair out of his eyes, head and shoulders peeking above the water. “Mike,” he says, pulling Mike up with him, their fingers still intertwined.
“Yeah?” Mike says, tilting his head so the water trickles out of his ears, wincing slightly. “What is it?”
Will’s eyes dart back and forth between his, and then Mike feels his hand squeeze his own. “I don’t want you to, like, think I moved back for you,” he starts, which in and of itself would be enough to get Mike’s soul soaring straight out of his own body, if it weren’t for Will’s thumb pressed against his pulse point like some kind of mortal tether. “Because it’s not like that, I promise. But I think– I think I realized there’s a difference between things you want and things you need, you know?”

Mike opens his eyes. Then–
“Will,” he says, and it comes out a bit strangled. “Is that a puppy?”
This is a bit of a stupid question. Mike isn’t dumb. He knows what a puppy looks like. The thing in Will’s hands– a little wrinkled and brown and very covered in fur– is definitely a puppy.
Will brings home a dog. It goes about as well as expected.

“We’re supposed to be a team,” Will repeats, his voice trembling yet still a bit angry. His eyes are narrowed at Mike—defensive but still on guard, wounded but still ready to fight.
It’s familiar. Somehow, the two of them always end up like this.

Spiderman’s fingers press a little firmly into Mike’s shirt. "Just – hang on!"
"What do you mean just hang – was that a pun," Mike sputters, clutching onto Spiderman for dear life as they swing through the city, and he can hear the superhero laugh through the racing wind in his ears, the rumble of it under Mike’s arm wrapped around his middle.
In a city of superheroes, Mike keeps running into Spiderman, much to his dismay.

It’s always been this way, his whole life, giving away love; to crying girls in sandboxes, to loud boys on swing sets, to uncaring fathers who yell and break things and force him to change, only to leave anyway. By the time he realizes the love isn’t infinite, it’s too late to fight his nature, and his heart bleeds out, year by year, until he’s drained and tired and empty.

Mike’s been waiting 737 days for this exact moment, always too intimately aware of every single second that’s passed him by since he disappeared. “You’re alive,” he tells him, stupid and reverent. This time, it seems to get through to Will. He watches the hard exterior recede, exposing the gentle warmth that Mike has always admired
“I’m alive,” Will repeats. “I’m alive.” He lets out a hysterical giggle and suddenly he’s the one falling into Mike, limbs tangling and hands clutching at each other until he can’t tell where one of them ends and the other begins. “And you’re here. You came for me.”
Will’s fingers dig into his forearms. Mike swallows the instinctive I would always come for you on the tip of his tongue.
OR: Even after watching Will get trapped in the Upside Down for good, Mike never stopped believing he was alive. After stumbling upon a gate two years later, he takes a chance and learns to finally follow his heart.

Its a fact. The sky is blue, the dirt is brown, Mike Wheeler is the most annoying person Will has met. So what if he’s attractive? So what if he can play guitar and is overall charming? That doesnt mean Will wants to date him, or kiss him, or hold his hands. Cause he doesn’t. Cause he can’t stand Mike Wheeler. (His friends try to call bullshit. Max just laughs)
Mike Wheeler might be in love with Will Byers
Sure, he’s never really been in love before, but he makes it his mission to “woo will byers” (Dustin laughed at that) He can’t help it! He’s smart and dorky and cool, these are facts. Mike felt like swooning after their (admittedly awkward) first conversation. Will’s also the prettiest boy he’s ever seen, though there may be a small bias on his part. There’s just one small problem, he’s pretty sure Will doesn’t like him. (His friends tell him to go for it, El tells him he’s stupid.)
Aka: The college au slight enemies to friends to lovers that literally nobody asked for but i’m writing anyways where Mike calls Will nicknames, Will “wants nothing to do with him” and their respective friends want them to get their heads out of their asses already and kiss.

The room is deathly silent.
“El.” Max gently shakes her shoulder. “Get out of there.”
Eleven takes off the blindfold.
“Wait, no! We need to know what he’s upset about!” Mike is looking at Max like she’s crazy.
Everyone stares at Mike.
“What?” he says.
They keep staring at him.
“Were you actually dropped as an infant or something?” Max finally says.---
Will is hopelessly in love with Mike, Mike is utterly obtuse, and Max is the only person with a brain. Featuring Dustin and Lucas sharing a single braincell, Hopper despising Mike (lovingly), the Girlboss Gang aka Will, Eleven, and Max, and Will crying like so often, but it's okay because I'm wrapping him up in a blanket and snuggling him forever.
Takes place just before Season 3, aka the mall season, and starts with Mike/Eleven and Max/Lucas.
UNFINISHED, and probably won't be finished (sorry).
