“You’ve never kissed anyone?” Ryan replies, exasperated and ever so slightly shocked. "But you’re- I mean, look at you.” Naim looks at himself up and down. He has absolutely no idea what Ryan is trying to say, and he absolutely refuses to read into it too much in fear of getting his hopes up.
“I don’t really know what to tell you. Nobody has ever wanted to kiss me.”
Or
Ryan proposes teaching Naim how to kiss so he can make out with that girl he keeps going on about. Naim is so incredibly head over heels he'd say yes to anything Ryan asked.

“I love you,” Kieren says. “I love you a lot.”
“More than the worm?” Ron asks. It sounds a little pathetic the second it falls from his lips, but he needs to know where he ranks in Kieren’s heart. Hopefully he’s high, highest, or close to it.
Kieren pats his hair. “I don’t love the worm at all.”
The longer their relationship continues, the less important worms and digging and dirt are to Kieren. Ron wants to celebrate by making their first time absolutely perfect.

“I kinda feel like your worm is my rain,” Ron says gently. “I’ll help ya keep looking, but I don’t think that it’s the worm. You’re digging for something else, maybe. Something about you ya think ya lost.” He takes one of Kieren’s slack hands between his own. “I’d like to help you find it.”
Everyday while working his shift at the Publix deli counter, Ron sees a muddy, forlorn looking boy. He makes it his mission to know and take care of him, even if it means he has to dig up a few worms along the way.

Kieren understood what it was like to be fighting yourself, to be struggling uphill while the rest of the world spun around you. Kieren kept Ron company, even when he didn’t mean to. His digging was like a metronome, always starting and stopping at the same time.

Summary
Kieren feels strangely vulnerable, sitting on the floor of a stranger’s house, rain-soaked and cut up from where the streetlight fell on his leg. He shivers. But it isn’t the damp clothes sticking to his skin that has him shivering. It’s the way Ron’s eyes meet his across the room.
Ron is staring at him. Intense blue eyes boring holes into Kieren’s own eyes. It’s startling. Kieren looks down as he speaks.
“The worm brought me here.”
It’s silent for a second after he says it, almost like the hurricane itself stopped. Kieren expects laughter, or another scoff. He doesn’t get either.
What he receives is silence.
The worm controls him. It tells him what to think, to eat, to say. It takes over his body and controls his arms. It hurts the people Kieren loves. It hurts him. It makes him want to hurt himself. It tells him that he should.
The worm is out to get him, so Kieren has to get it first. That’s just life. It’s what his dad used to always say. Kieren, life is tough. You have to be tougher.
His dad should’ve taken his own advice.

Summary
Kieren trusts Ron, is the crux of it. Trusts him with his life, beyond that. Kieren considers him a friend. The only friend he's ever had. So losing him isn’t an option. He only just found Ron. The one person in a long time who can stand to be in his presence for longer than a few minutes, and he might lose him, too.
Please, let me keep him, he looked up to the sky and prayed, for the first time since he lost his dad. I’ve never had a friend. Please, don’t take him, too.
Then Ron had woken up, prayers answered. Kieren had sucked in a breath, heart racing, relieved. He silently thanked whatever being had listened to him, and blinked away his tears before the other boy could see.

Years on from Bandee, part of him was still scared of how Ryan made him feel. The things he made him want. Maybe he'd never be able to let go of that fear entirely, ruined by what they'd been through in more ways than a murderous shadow. But tonight there was an ache inside of him like a bruise and Naim needed desperately for it to be pressed.

"Do you really wanna know?" Naim practically whispered against his lips before he pushed Ryan backwards a bit to separate them.
Ryan nodded eagerly, like a puppy, wanting to know every single thing that ran through Naim's head.
"I like staring at you when you can't see me or don't notice," Naim confessed quietly, the tip of his nose brushing Ryan's. "Like, how...you like public stuff. You know, like the handy on the bus. Gives me a thrill or somethin'...Sometimes I think about watching you...doing things you don't want others to see."
"Yeah?" Ryan swallowed, suddenly feeling like he was salivating. "Doin' what exactly?"
Naim's grin widened a little more. "I don't know..." he teased. "Like, touching yourself or something."

Jerking back almost to the opposite end of the bench, Naim felt blood rushing to his head, pulse pounding in his ears. Suddenly, he was analyzing the Ryan sitting in front of him, searching his eyes for that certain sharpness he could sometimes catch in the entity. Ryan's face had dropped, and it sent a lurch through Naim's stomach. As though he had the right to question the boy sitting on the bench; as though he had the right to doubt for even a second that it was him, really him, when they had spent the entire day together.
OR: After a too-close call with the entity, Naim has to relearn how to touch Ryan.

Naim is at work stocking shelves while Ryan and Chris are at a bar, probably laughing and sharing a smoke and having a good time. Naim feels so fucking stupid. He feels so fucking jealous. It doesn’t matter, he tells himself as he washes his hands and trudges back behind the counter. Ryan loves him and chooses him everyday. Ryan constantly wants to fuck him and constantly grabs at him and kisses him and feeds him and comforts him and forgives him. Ryan washes his hair and picks him up everyday and never complains about being tired, even though Naim knows he must be. Naim has no reason to be jealous of some guy who filters his Instagram photos and poses shirtless on a bike.
But he is.
Naim struggles to cope with Ryan's new coworker who looks suspiciously like Hunter. Ryan helps him see sense.

Because fucking Ryan is here, standing two meters away on the smoking patio of a gay club in downtown, staring at Naim with ten times more of everything than it ever would, which means he has to be real. The blond rubs his offending knuckles as soon as the other guy is gone, and the ghost of a smirk plays at his lips as he says:
“Happy Birthday, by the way.”
Naim doesn’t know if he wants to kiss him, or kill him.

For the rest of the afternoon he turns the scene over and over in his head. It shouldn’t bother him. It was a 20 second interaction in his 9 hour workday. He’s never going to see her again. Maybe it would bother him less if she didn’t wear the same shade of lipstick as his mother, or if her stupid outfit wasn’t the same color as his grandma's dining room curtains, or if kind smiles from older women didn’t strike a raw cord of longing in his chest.
Maybe if not for the cruel reminder that God doesn’t love him. Maybe if not for the fact that he still cares about receiving God’s love.
Loving Naim is a sin that strangers feel Ryan should repent for. Ryan seeks comfort the only way he knows how.
