Summary
The bar is hazy and dimly lit, the kind of place you would conjure up if someone asked you to imagine a bar. Sticky floors, sticky tables. It smells faintly of sweat. Faintly of piss. Also kind of like beer. Ed is sitting on a stool at the end of the bar, leaning on his elbows and nursing a pint. Two men in the corner are engaged in a rousing game of chess. There’s a commentator standing above them detailing every move.
“Queen to Rook 5,” he says. “A risky move, indeed.”
“A risky move, indeed,” Ed echoes under his breath, staring down into his glass.

It’s just that ever since their whirlwind romance—Stede assigned to his story by mistake when the editor in chief swapped the local interest story with the cover story, coming to Ed’s studio, treating him like a regular guy instead of the celebrity he’d been for nearly a quarter century, and then getting ravished thoroughly after fourteen hours of conversation that seemed like five minutes, while the sun rose over the New York skyline—he’s more likely to be in his sweats in the kitchen than at an album release party or a kink night.

Edward Teach is out for a midnight stroll when he stops in front of St. James Palace to light a cigarette. There's an oddly compelling guard standing sentry. Ed gets to talking to him, and it becomes a habit.
His lungs burn a little, and he blows the smoke out with a porny sort of moan and of course that’s when he notices that there’s a guard in the box, and that he’s blown smoke right into his face.
“Oh, fuck, sorry, mate,” he says, waving it away. Of course the guard doesn’t say anything. Doesn’t even flinch, just stares straight ahead, like Ed’s not there, waving his hands in the air like a madman. Only not quite like Ed’s not there. There’s an unmistakable twinkle in his eye. Huh.
