Summary
On the next day there is a blue glass bottle half-buried in the sand near their little fishing boat, a scroll of paper curling inside tantalizingly. Ed's first thought is that Stede is going to be absolutely delighted if his wildly impractical way of sending messages somehow caught on, but as he steps closer, he realizes that the handwriting on the letter is too familiar by far to be someone else's.
Dear Ed, the letter reads. Ed tilts his head to have a look through the glass.
You said you only ever received one of my letters in a bottle, and that you found it lovely. Since all the others got lost at sea, I thought I would write more of them for you.
“Stede!!” Ed yells, turning towards their ramshackle inn and holding the bottle up when Stede pops his head through the open door, eyebrows arched. “You lunatic!” Stede does not even have the decency to be embarrassed, looking down mock-coyly before he disappears again.
“This is some wildly romantic shit,” Ed mutters, getting the letter out of the bottle and unrolling it fully.

And then it's Ed who pulls back, tilting his head in what looks like…confusion?
“Wait,” he says, with an eyebrow raised. “What do you mean, a tattoo because of you?”
Stede pulls back, too.
He is equally confused.
Ed squints at him.
“You said ‘a tattoo',” Ed reiterates, inexplicably emphasising the ‘a’. “I mean. I understand why this one might get a bigger reaction, or whatever. I get it's maybe more meaningful than the others. But–”
“Hang on,” Stede interjects, his brain snagging on ‘this one’. On ‘the others’.
The others?
What does that mean?

Before I get into the matter at hand, I must apologise for contacting you out of the blue like this. You do not know me, and all rules of etiquette state that correspondence such as this should be saved only for those one knows personally, but I feel this is a worthy exception to the rule.
Stede finds love letters between his wife, Mary, and her lover, Doug, hidden at the back of their wardrobe. Curious, he reads the ones he finds, and uncovers the details of her affair. In many of the letters, Doug has mentioned a man named Ed, whom Stede assumes is Doug’s partner. Eager to do the right thing and protect Ed from his own inevitable heartbreak, Stede writes a letter of his own.

Their engagement was shortlived though because tragically Stede Bonnet was swallowed by the waves. Ed grew up in hiding, raised by pirates, and now, 40 years later, he's ready to take back his home and title. While meeting a sensible horse, eerie twin governors, weird ghosts who strangely have it out for him, an eccentric artist and a swamp-witch communing with birds... the weirdest, most exciting person would be the beautiful man who feels like home even without knowing him - and who can apparently turn into an orange cat upon hearing a magical spell word.
Ed’s journey is a miserable trip through memories, insecurities, and obstacles - so having the man, Bonny, as a companion is just… nice. However, it would be even nicer if he would finally take off his orange fur and cat whiskers to show his beautiful human features again.

Stede stops beside him, hand on the small of Ed’s back, and Ed leans into the touch, offers his cheek when he feels Stede leaning in. It’s such a tiny gesture, that buss on his beard, but Ed can’t actually remember the last time anyone thought to do it. Stede has softened Ed; Ed has allowed himself to be softened.
A year ago, if someone had told Ed he would be thinking about raising chickens, he’d have laughed himself to an early grave. Then again, a year ago, Ed expected to find himself on the wrong end of a cannon sooner or later, gone out the way of Calico Jack. Now he’s here, in a home he’s going to build with the man he loves beyond all reason, with nothing more pressing than how to fix a leaky roof or where to acquire a set of furniture not bitten with dry rot.
There are many things Ed wishes he’d done differently, but there are an equal number he wouldn’t change because they all led him here, to this kitchen on a sleepy morning, Stede’s warmth at his side.
