Peter forces a smile, but he can still hear it:
‘No, no, no, please, not him, not him, c’mon—’
He looks at Bucky and is instantly hit with the old Bucky face. Full block, expressionless wilderness, a six-lane blacktop of good luck guessing what’s going on back here. Miles of unreadable. The expression Bucky rocked for at least a year, when Peter was shiny and new to this, before all the smirks and smiles crept in, and before he was allowed to guess out loud what was behind them.
“You got to me fast,” Peter says, echoing Tony’s words, tone a touch flat. Trying to make it fact, not feeling, seems to be working. If Peter was to make this feeling, he doesn’t think he could deal. At all. Fact is safe. Fact is extremely not a feeling.
Bucky gives him a clipped nod.
“You got to me very fast.” Peter’s own addition this time. He’d seen the video. It was very. Very.
Retrospect: noun, the act of looking back and going 'oh fuck, that's what that was'.

Bucky doesn’t think about it at all just after coming off the ice and in the wind.
First few weeks after the riverbank, it’s all fight-or-flight, anyway. He’s paranoid as hell, putting too much effort into not snapping necks in panic. Don’t kill, it would draw attention, move, vanish. He still waits for orders that no one’s giving, so get the fuck outta here with that, he’s got bigger problems.
When Steve shows up, as if Bucky can be fixed with some elbow grease, all Bucky feels is a threat, the past coming to collect. He runs, and wants to erase himself the same way Hydra did, doesn’t want to be found, fixed, saved, and the last thing on his mind is someone he’s never actually met.
He doesn’t notice it in Schkeuditz.
Tether is most common when folk talk about it, soulmates when they preach abstinence in church. But it’s a distance thing. Eight feet, three inches. Doesn’t sound like fate to Bucky. Sounds like math.

It was different when that happened—the first time Peter had worked with Mr. Stark, and also had his first ‘Do I like dick? I might like dick’ revelation. Jesus, it was so long ago, and what a truly fucked-up day to reconnect with a blast from his pubescent sexual confusion.
Peter attempts to get up, gets very softly pushed back down with a frown, opens his stupid mouth, and, still a lot out of it, lets this slip past his filter:

Summary
Bucky, who once again looks exactly as tired as Peter feels, bends to pick up the cat, which, betrayal of betrayals, does not hiss at him, and gently leaves it behind the door before closing it. Then, with the most exhausted sigh Peter has ever heard in his entire miserable, disaster of a life, Bucky asks:
“What the fuck do you want from me? What the hell do I need to do for you to stop?”
That’s a good question. Two very good questions.
But Peter’s throat is tight, and he can’t possibly answer one without the answer to the second one contradicting it, so instead of speaking, he steps forward, away from that window. Comes right up to Bucky, smells the leather and maybe smoke and man, and does something he should probably think through for longer than five whole seconds.
It’s a compulsion. A disease. An absolutely humiliating, clawing need to be liked by him, and Peter isn’t one to speak ill of people, but Bucky can be a real, capital-D Dick.

The first thing the Asset does after crawling out of the collapsed bunker is put a bullet through a rat the size of a toddler trying to chew his boot off. The first thing Bucky does, though that happens much later, is laugh. It’s real fucking ironic to be standing in a sea of burning sand after centuries in his deep-freeze deluxe and still be cold.
Hell of a welcome back.
It’s simple. The world ended. He didn’t.

His head is pounding, his heart is pounding, his den’s a war zone, the bed broken. His goddamn mattress looks molested. Jesus. What the fuck was that?
In Bucky’s defense, the compound’s a revolving door, and he barely recognizes half the faces most of the time, let alone pays attention to memos that pop up on his phone.

Summary
Peter pushes Bucky away.
Except “pushes” might not be the right word. “Shoves” is too polite. “Yeets” feels closer, but “catapults” is probably the most accurate. He uses just a little too much strength, and Bucky goes flying. Very flying. Horizontally too. Feet off the ground, airborne, and lands back-first into the murder clown that’s still skittering around.
There’s a sickening thud, followed by the sound of Bucky grunting, and Peter—who is two seconds away from dying of a possible heart attack, there it is—webs the fuck out of there. To the voice of Bucky screaming into the comms, “What the hell, Queens?!” some nasty cackling in a background, and a single gunshot.
In which Sam knows best (don’t tell him, he’ll never shut up about it), Bucky flirts like a malfunctioning toaster on its last spark, everyone and their nosy grandmother refuse to mind their own business, and, yes, at least one clown gets what’s coming to it.
