Summary
In his early days as a slave, Aventurine was subjected to neuro-reprogramming that, when activated, makes him mindlessly obedient. Thankfully, the program was scrapped, and it’s been over a decade since he’s even seen someone who knows the key phrase – but Aventurine’s luck runs out while he’s crashing Ratio’s vacation.
Naturally, Ratio is not content to let some bottom feeding slaver make off with one of his few friends. Offering further assistance, however, leads to unforeseen consequences - because as Ratio begins researching Aventurine’s condition and searching for a way to free him from it, their feelings for one another begin to change. But Ratio is all too aware of the ethical issues of being involved with a patient, especially one who has given him so much power over their mind . . . and as for Aventurine, Ratio is the one person he can't risk losing.

Aventurine finds himself with a little crush on his co-worker Veritas Ratio. He tries his best to dismiss it, after all it's stupid to have a crush on someone who doesn't even like you all that much, especially if you're supposed to work with them. Unfortunately it doesn't quite work and seems to go deeper than Aventurine would like it to. But Ratio wouldn't possibly like him back..., right?

Aventurine’s chest hurts. He can feel something thick and wet dripping down his front, but when he looks down there’s nothing there.
Is this real? This can’t be real. Ratio’s expression is achingly sincere, a look that he’s never seen before. Surely the professor wouldn’t be caught directing such feelings at Aventurine of all people.
And yet, the man leans over the desk to gently brace his palms against the sides of Aventurine’s face. Aventurine realizes that he can’t feel the chair underneath him, or the scratch of fur trim against his neck, or the wood grain under his fingers—Ratio’s warm touch is the only thing that feels real.
“There are people waiting for you, Aventurine. I don’t know if that thought brings you comfort, but it is the truth.”
Aventurine is having a confusing time at the Horizon of Existence.

Wealth, status, power. It was no lie that he had succeeded in all three under the profession of the IPC. But all of that was lost within a second and he fell back to the gutters. Once more he stood chained, face to face with Jade and his rights stripped away.
After being punished for a crime he didn't commit, Aventurine is back to square one, thrown back into his home planet where he must navigate the harsh conditions of the planet, locate his sister and face the struggles of being (one of) the last Avgin. Maybe he could even get his job back in the process.
However he's not alone as a very moody owl who resembles a certain doctor is there to keep him company.

Veritas opens his eyes and meets the gaze of his husband. Kakavasha stares at him like he’s the only thing in the world, reaching forwards to brush his fingers over the winged man’s face. His fingertips press against Veritas’s skin gently. The scholar hums, allowing himself to indulge and nuzzle his face into the physical touch.
“Mh,” he grumbles. “‘s too early.” Magenta-cyan looks at him lovingly. He can’t get quite used to that stare – even though they’re married, and have been together for quite a long time. It’s so strange, to be adored, to be loved, in every shape, way, and form. Kakavasha truly does adore him, and that’s something he still has trouble coming to terms with.
The ring on his finger says everything. So does the forehead kiss his beloved husband leans in to give him.
