Ed's mother taught him to read when he was a boy, but through a series of miscommunications, Stede ends up reading aloud to Ed nearly every night (with Ed willfully taking advantage of Stede's misunderstanding to spend more time with him).

The stranger lowers his voice, talking in a warm rumble through the gap in the door. “I need to talk about Stede.”
There’s something about the way he says his name, a tiny pause before, almost running out of air as he breathes out the word. His eyes flick away as he says it, like he’s looking to someone who used to be in the empty space beside him.

Summary

Meanwhile unconventional farmer Stede Bonnet has his own (secret) mission: to save as many of the birds as he can.
They should find themselves on opposite sides of this war, but Ed's bored out of his skull and Stede's fucking fascinating. Turns out they've got more in common than not. Along with the eccentric crew of Stede's Revenge farm, they'll find a way to win--together.

Today he was wearing a short black shirt, and his many tattoos were on full display. The man mounted a motorcycle and kicked it on with a low grumble that could be heard even inside the building.
“Think you’ll ever just say hello to him?” Lucius asked. “Maybe casually park your car by his bike, happen to be walking in as he’s leaving work, say, ‘oh hello, very cool gentleman in your leather outfit, my name’s Stede, I enjoy staring at your arse through the windows every day—”
“Oh, leave him alone,” Oluwande interrupted. “Stede’ll talk to him when he’s ready. Or he won’t.”

Additional Note: When I first wrote this fic and it's sequel, I was working from what I believed to be a fairly innocuous supposition--namely, most pirates were illiterate. Having listened to folks in the fandom, re: what this supposition means for the character of Ed in OFMD (a brown, indigenous man) as well as having read up on the historical figure of Edward Thatch (an upper middle class, and therefore, likely educated, man) I've changed the few references to Stede having taught Ed to read. Obviously, the accompanying podfic will reflect the old text, but I wanted to make sure that I changed the original due to enlightening fandom conversations.
