Ibarra laughed, leaning forward. His chin rested on his knees, leaving him curled into a ball. “Didn’t I say I couldn’t tell you already?”
Elias had only ever loved two people.
One pushed forward by the promise of freedom; the other, bound by his allegiance, and a promise written in the footnotes of a sepia photograph.
Loss, Elias learns, is the price of revolution—but when the pavements bleed red, he wonders if it's at too great a cost.

It is said that blood runs thicker than water.
Often, this is meant to say that the bonds formed between kin are the strongest and most important. Other interpretations, though, suggest that the original expression fell more along the lines of the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb. That is, perhaps the people whom we actively decide to have in our lives are more important after all.

There’s a loud clatter as Mike Wheeler springs back from the phial of Amorentia after smelling it like it’s about to bite him, his hip slamming into the edge of a nearby desk. The impact sends it wobbling, and a potion book skids off the surface, hitting the floor with an unceremonious thud.
Mike glares at the book as if it personally offended him, making no move to pick it up.
Then he looks up—and catches Will’s eyes.
His face collapses instantly, twisting into something between horror and grief, and he drags his hands over his face like that might undo whatever just happened.
“Oh my god,” he says, muffled. “I’m so screwed.”
“What the actual fuck, Mike?” Max says flatly.

Summary
Will Byers felt like he was in the lab again. White walls, humming florescent lights that burned his eyes, starchy, itchy clothes that weren't his and didn't fit right, and a stranger in uniform that only responded to "doctor".
The only new things were the handcuffs cold around his wrists and the strange flower-like stereos that circled the room— they're giving him a headache of epic proportions, but it wasn't worse than feeling an axe take 11 hits to his neck or being burned alive 3 fold so he's managing.
-- Will knows how this will go, he knows how this will end, he also knows he only has one shot of making it a Happy Ending for everyone left even if that means he won't see anything after that implied New Beginnings.

“I think you’re just trying to be different,” Will speculates. The ice cream he bought sits forgotten on the counter between them. He looks up at Mike with a frown, his eyes narrowing like he’s trying to figure him out.
“No, I’m not, there’s just so many better, less generic flavours than vanilla,” Mike argues.
Whether it’s Mike repeatedly calling vanilla boring, or the fact that he’s not nearly as angry as Will, he knows it’ll piss him off.And it does.
Will’s nostrils flare and his eye twitches. He’s clearly fed up with this debate already and Mike loves how easy it is to get under his skin.
He inhales slowly, trying to calm himself—trying not to fall for Mike’s bait. He relaxes his face before declaring in a collected tone, “I hate you, and I’m never coming back.”
That makes two of us, Mike thinks.
“And yet you’re still standing here. Still talking to me.”
OR
It’s 1988, the summer before senior year. Mike and Max land jobs at the Scoops Ahoy while Will and El move to Hawkins and start working at Surfer Boy Pizza just in time for the opening. Banter ensues.

Mike isn’t satisfied. He swallows thickly, choking down the words 'don’t you want more?'
