Tui, the moon spirit, chose the younger twin, stripping Yue’s hair of every trace of pigment until it shone white as moonlit snow. Meanwhile, La, the ocean spirit, chose Xing Hua, darkening the upper half of her hair to the color of the deepest depths of the sea before letting the lower half fade into silver, like moonlight spread across dark water.
