Not even done with this fic yet, and I’m in love. The worldbuilding and characterization are both delightful, and Lan Zhan by any other name is still Lan Zhan. It’s fascinating, too, to see how the author integrates their premise into MDZS canon.
Update: Stellar!!! 😍😍😍 Definitely a must-read if you like canon divergence fix-its! The Twin Jades of Lan have an especially beautiful relationship in this, and WangXian takes a backseat to LWJ growing up as a rogue cultivator in the initial chapters, but omgomgomg TWIN JADES and LWJ being himself even with a scary face, and WWX liking LWJ immediately, and falling in love and sexual attraction with him long before anyone else recognizes his worth! And the Nies! And Jiang Cheng! (As with canon, I ricochet between wanting to punch him in the face and buy him a drink, depending on the scene.) Really, just, everyone.
I don’t want to stick spoilers in here beyond the above squee, but this epic is fire and I love the bonus author’s note chapter discussing their goals and thoughts while writing the fic. All-around marvelous! Swallowed, like, two days of AI reading it to me, and my only real regret on said days was having to pause for RL stuff.
New-to-me MDZS classic, istg.

Well, they’ll learn the hard way because he’s going to force them to deal with whatever their communication issues are before it causes him more work.

A cool AU wherein SY is Shizi SY instead of Shizun SQQ, and LBH essentially spends his summer breaks from Cang Qiong Peak as SY’s servant/student. I love seeing how SY’s actions have similar positive effects to canon on LQG and NYY, albeit through LBH. I also love the final reunion scenes—chef's kiss all around, thoroughly satisfying on all counts! The epilogue was great, too. 😆
The Old Madam is my favorite new cast addition! I love how much she loves LBH and recognizes (along with LBH) that he’ll be her son-in-law before SY realizes that’s what he wants too. 🤭🥰

LBH figures out something forced his Shizun to abandon him, makes some unexpected friends, gets his matchmaker on, and tries to prove to his Shizun that he will never become the man Shizun fears.
It’s super cute to see the scheming, post-Abyss LBH try to do things “right” this time, and notice the myriad ways his Shizun worked to nurture and protect him, proving he’d always known the truth about LBH and had loved him anyway. Also, the unexpected LBH&SQH was sweet!

A+ Fix-It wherein the SYSTEM outs itself during the trial by fighting a truth compulsion artifact for control of SQQ; Binghe and the Peak Lords learn SQQ is ride-or-die for them and only an asshole under extreme duress; doctor Mu Qingfang is The Actual Best; and SQQ’s found family devise a plan to free him—not just from Huan Hua Palace, but the curse of the evil SYSTEM.
I love the parallels the author draws between the SYSTEM and Xin Mo, and how they further complicate the unreliable narrator narrative in SVSSS by suggesting SYSTEM shenanigans might be behind not just Shen Yuan’s cruelty as SQQ, but perhaps also Shen Jiu’s. 🤔😍

Cute! Eddie gets got by his own protective instincts, and winds up liking Steve as a person, not just a hot guy—at which point he then gets got by Steve, to the happiness of both.
Side note: I love the Party as supporting cast here! They’re as aggressive and obnoxious and sweet and devoted as they are in canon, demonstrating why Steve and Eddie (and I!) adore them even when they’re being pushy and frustrating. They feel like themselves—they feel real—so despite being the plot device forcing Steddie into proximity, they never feel that way.
Further side-notes: I love the author’s end notes detailing their background headcanons for this fic!
