She has lost her family. Martha has seen the look in her eyes before, and now she will make a choice, born out of loyalty to her friend and the people who will need her.
“We’re coming with you,” she says, and without waiting for a response, she disappears back into their flat. “Mickey, pack your bags!”
Mickey already has a suitcase open on their blue duvet when she walks into the bedroom. Martha thinks about what this means for only a second, a brief roar of old jealousy, then dismisses it. She watches Rose follow her back into the bedroom to watch them pack; she looks stunned and moved all rolled up into silence.
Then she leaves. Comes back after an hour with two fresh keys. Threads them onto two thin chains and offers them up like she is standing at an altar.
Martha fights the urge to tremble as she accepts the sacrifice that she is about to make.
