Summary
Old mage Viktor is a responsible sentinel against a timeline like his ever occurring again, and takes occasional, very brief mental health breaks to universes so divergent from his own that his interference isn't necessary. To remind himself what a healthy, living world looks like, and why he's going through all this effort.
In the process, he eventually encounters the Machine Herald, gets a little too interested, returns a few times too many, and gets caught by his fellow Viktor.
(Ie: I threw Mage Viktor and Machine Herald Viktor in the same room because I thought it'd be interesting, and it's turning into, 'Mage Viktor tries to be helpful, ends up getting dragged into the middle of things when Vikjayce make eye-contact once and unilaterally decide they're keeping this sad old man.)

When Jayce rushed inside, Viktor had the man pressed against the wall, a knife pressed to his guest’s ribs, not very prince-like, but something tightened inside Jayce as he took in the state of the room. The tailcoat Viktor was previously wearing lay crumpled on the floor, the chairs by the table pushed back as if they rose in a haste.
“Are you alright, my prince?” Jayce asked, unable to look away from the way the Viktor’s shirt was partially unbuttoned at the neck, rumpled down his chest, showing pale skin and collarbones. Jayce’s hand rested on his sword, fingers tingling to pull it out, to use it, but Prince Viktor took a step back and swept his hair out of his eyes. Jayce’s sight zeroed in on something that looked like a lovebite low on the prince’s neck, and Jayce’s hackles rose.
“It’s alright, Talis, he was just leaving.”

“Jayce speaking,” he corrected, annoyed. The man had a thick accent, a kind of voice trained to be smooth, a customer service voice.
He managed to close his door and went down the stairs, his hands full of his last packed box, ready to move out.
“Oh, hi. Hello. I’m sorry to bother you so early, it was very... hard to find your contact.”
He kept the phone on his shoulder as he got closer to his car, struggling to find the keys.
“Sorry, this is not a good time, who is it?” Jayce pressed, wanting to get to the point.
“Uh... I’m the...” he heard a sigh from the other side, he couldn’t deal with this, not at this time. He was about to hang out when the voice continued. “I’m the organ recipient. Of your friend.” A pause. “It’s Viktor.”
He heard as his box of shit hit the ground, unable to do anything about it.
