One day, a man walks into her café refusing to show his.-----
[The scar] crept up from under his collar along his neck, and her eyes traced the length of it. The part that disappeared under the thick, dark waves covering his right eye was still stitched closed with fresh black sutures twisting deep into his skin. He must have been split open to the bone.
Whatever happened had hurt, in more ways than one, and that hurt was reflected now in the way his lovely mouth dropped open in fear and how horror darkened the one eye fixated on Rey’s face.

Celebrations are in full swing on Ajan Kloss after the Resistance's glorious defeat of the First Order, but all is not as it should be. Ben Solo has kept to himself ever since his wife died nearly twenty years before. He prefers spending quiet days on his farm tending his crops and his animals. His peace is disturbed, however, when a pretty, young horse thief appears in his barn, badly injured.
Anyone else would have shot the girl, but Solo senses there is more to her story.

Fresh off a panic attack, Rey takes in a self-plucking parrot with a dirty mouth.
~The parrot is crammed into the back corner of the supply store where the vents are loudest and the ceiling mildewed. He’s wearing a chipped plastic bite collar and less than a third of his dark feathers.
The rest are arrayed on the floor of the cage in a pitiful, dirty pile.
As she approaches he ducks away, shy. Trembling, hiding his face in the worn tarp that covers the cage.
“Are you a pretty bird?” she asks.~
