Why would I care? Shir asks herself. Am I seriously thinking about...about becoming my father? Giving in to them, when not even a year ago I was screaming at Olake in the woods about signing the treaty?
Maybe he had been right. Maybe she had been too young to understand, too uneducated. That’s what Itinerant had respectfully suggested: that Shir just didn’t know better, was too sheltered and small-minded to see the scope of the world.
If Yawa knew, or if Olake did, they would allege she had some kind of attraction to the man. In her heart, Shir knows that to be false. She wants Itinerant’s approval as she once sought her own father’s. But he had compromised, and so she had let him go. That was all there is.
Shir was not compromising anything, for she was not a coward.
OR a Tain Shir character study, because her backstory in Monster was too compelling to let go of until I wrote a fic.

"How do you know Nonagesimus has gone somewhere dangerous?" asked Isaac. "Have you wired some kind of alert system?"
"It's, uh. It's on the schedule," said Gideon. "I just... forgot. Because of the bread."
Nobody was convinced by this, least of all Gideon.
"It's a Ninth House thing," Gideon went on, backing away with increasing desperation. This was a slightly more plausible explanation, if only because nobody wanted to look too closely at what fell under the awful skeletal-ribbed and rotting umbrella of Ninth House things. "Gotta go—!" And she was out the door, gone.
But it wasn't a Ninth House thing, except inasmuch as it was happening to the only two representatives of the noble and decrepit Ninth House on this quite literally godforsaken rock. Gideon knew Harrow had gone somewhere dangerous—knew that Harrow was back in the lab where they had only just completed a horrible trial—because she could see it, clear as day: an awful overlay on her vision of that terrible dangerous room and a pair of terrible dangerous hands drawing some kind of ward next to the plinth.
The hands were definitely Harrow's.
This was definitely a problem.

Harrowhark became very aware of Gideon next to her. Her bodyguard always seemed to appear out of nowhere the instant Harrowhark mused on her own lack of physical strength.
Gideon looked up from her tablet, almost as if she could read Harrow's mind. The stadium's bright lights seemed to bother her as much as its sound tormented Harrow. She'd since been wearing sunglasses throughout this entire interminable week. Gideon lifted them now to look at Harrow, and the gold of them stung far more than the lights.
"You look like you're about to pass out. Or die." Gideon said this cheerfully, as if nothing could be better.
