Summary
I always thought the idea of soulmates was some kind of cruel joke.
Your soulmate is said to be the other half of yourself; the one person you can always trust. The bond between souls is said to be so strong that it's impossible for them to cause you any harm.
Even if they tried, they can never hurt you. You cannot cause each other pain.
Your soulmate is your ultimate safe space. This sounds lovely and all, but how the hell are you ever supposed to find them?
I don't think it would go over very well if you just went around punching people, though evidence would suggest it would be efficient.
Like I said, a joke.
It's a good thing I like a good joke.

Summary
Again she heard the voice, but this time it was softer, closer. In her language, as if just for her.
"I am sorry that this has happened to you. I can keep your soul from leaving this world, but I am afraid you will be forever changed. There will be no going back to who you were before."
He paused a moment, letting her process his words.
"Or, if you'd like," he said, "I can allow your soul to move on peacefully. The choice is entirely yours. Know that if you choose to stay, your soul will be mine, and you will be forever bound to me."

Summary
"I don't want to pry," Xisuma said when they were speaking before his official invitation to join. "And not answering won't change whether or not you get whitelisted. We admins just prefer to have a heads up if anything's likely to come trying to dig you up, so we can keep you and everyone else safe."
Grian thought back to obsidian and endstone and blood, to tattered wings and torn robes and so so many unseeable eyes, and swallowed hard.
"No," he said, his voice shaky. "No, I don't think anyone will come looking for me."
"Okay," Xisuma answered, and that was that.
Until they invited two new people to the server.
or, the Hermitcraft Backstory Rule says that you don't ask other people about their backstory, you let them tell it if they want to and leave it be if they don't.
Unfortunately for Grian, one of the newest Hermits was also a player on his old server - one he'd thought had been dead for years - and she's going to drag his backstory kicking and screaming into the light whether she means to or not.

Summary
"Yeah," Ranboo nods, "there's a magic to star reading you know. Some people, when they point out the constellations, can make them brighter to others."
Tommy hesitates.
Tubbo, still laying on Ranboo's shoulder, pauses. Ranboo watches Tommy, again with that same look that Tubbo had before, with the cat at the sliding door. A test.
Tommy's insides curl unpleasantly.
"Ah," Tommy goes, careful to sound politely interested, not prying, not surprised, not overly curious. Just as if Ranboo had told him a fact about dinosaurs or the mechanics of a car- like magic is some distant thing that Tommy will only ever know the surface of. "That's cool."
or, tommy is magic and hiding, afraid to lose his best friends. unfortunately, ranboo and tubbo are intent on trying to figure him out.

Summary
Wilbur rolls his eyes. “I’m just patching you up out of some misplaced sense of guilt or nostalgia or whatever; after this, you can try and arrest me again as much as you want-”
“Nostalgia?” Tommy interrupts. He squints at the figure, all confusing tangents and cynical jokes, the bird still perched on his head. “What, do I know you or something?”
Wilbur’s face darkens. He reaches out a hand, rubbing absently at a long slash going through his trench coat, a tear in the seams of it all. Tommy stills.
“No,” the villain finally mutters with a brittle laugh. “No, you don’t.”
…Or: Superhero AU in which Wilbur, upon waking up in an alternate universe, accidentally becomes a villain. Maybe not a very good one, though - he remains insanely, outrageously protective over the very heroes (and vigilante) hunting him down.

Summary
Again, Tommy knew he shouldn’t care. But he knew he’d never be able to live with himself if he did what Wilbur asked. This guy deserved a chance to live, even if he was undead. His chance at a normal human life had been stolen, and while Tommy couldn’t explain why, he felt like he had to make that up to him.
“Just… let me try to find you a blood source that doesn’t involve hurting people,” Tommy said, squeezing his shoulders. “Once we get that worked out, and you don’t have to worry about feeding, we can figure out where to go from there.”
The frustration slowly leaked out of Wilbur’s face, until the only thing left in the lines of his forehead was exhaustion. Not physical exhaustion, but something more. Something deeper.
“You’re the worst fucking vampire hunter I’ve ever met.”
aka the fic where Tommy's google search history is probably 'what do I do when the vampire I'm trying to kill is depressed as hell and I feel too bad to actually kill him?'
(turns out the answer is 'make him your roommate and have a found family arc together')

Summary
The claws on Phil’s fingers could probably shred Wilbur’s skin to ribbons. Instead though, his touch was as light as could be as he cupped Wilbur’s face, thumb brushing his stinging cheek.
The scales were rough, but didn’t scratch him. If anything, his hand was blessedly cool against the heat on his face.
“Why is only this part of your face red?” Phil asked, his voice low.
Wilbur couldn’t remember the last time someone had cupped his face like this. The last time anyone had been gentle like this with him. It took all of his willpower not to melt into Phil’s hand.
“One of them hit me,” Wilbur admitted softly.
or, Wilbur is the cabin boy on a pirate ship, at least until the ship sinks and he's left marooned on a deserted island. It's just him, the few others that survived the wreck, and the waves to keep them company. Well, and the merman. Because apparently those things are real.
or or, being marooned on an island isn't too bad when you get a found family out of it.
