No matter how snotty it sounds, when you are alone, no one will hurt you, no one will betray you, no one will leave you, because there is no one to leave. And he has no one to leave. He doesn't hurt anyone and no one hurts him back. He is winning in any way.
He thought that he will be lonely for the rest of his life, but he met a person with whom he felt something different. And who knows, maybe it will actually work out.
