Bruce realises it then with a sudden startle, all the anger and frustration that had been building up over the last couple days freezing under his skin, blood cold.
"You're trying to make me angry…" Bruce carefully says out loud, all the pieces of the puzzle finally coming together, watching the way Jason's shoulders tense at the shift in tone from angry to a calculative calmness, "On purpose?"
Jason's previous expression, one filled with twisted amusement at Bruce's apparent annoyance is immediately replaced with something tragic. His blue eyes grow wide and fearful, and Bruce watches in delayed understanding as the boy takes a fearful step back.
(Jason's change in behavior is cause for concern. Fortunately, Bruce is a pretty good detective — most of the time.)

This is just a sweet excerpt from Jason’s early(ish) days at the Manor. AMAZING characterisation and there’s some subtle Red Hood foreshadowing as well but not too much. I liked this. 🥰

As the author stated in the notes; “you know when you watch hockey with someone you used to be really close with and then something happened and you both want to go back to it but you can't go back. But you can talk about hockey.”

It had been a long time since the bat signal called Jason. A long time since that particular beacon had anything to do with him. He stuck to his streets. Dealt with Black Mask and Penguin and Two-Face when it suited him.
Jason perched on rooftops and fire escapes and kept his eyes on the ground. He listened to police scanners and hacked into the Bats' comms.
He didn't look up.
He remembered it, though. The rush of adrenaline when he'd spot the bat illuminated in the sky. As Robin, it meant an adventure was to be had. It meant purpose. Magic.

When I say “I cried reading this,” most of the time I’m exaggerating. I am not exaggerating this time. This actually made me full blown cry harder than The Book Thief. I do not know what to make of that fact. This is a masterpiece, but also completely devastating. The writer captured the emotions perfectly.

Jason had been brought up in a dark place, where walls closed on him, food was rotten, and hearts were broken. He endured screams, insults, and hate thrown at him, and yet, he didn't mind admitting he loved being carried. His grateful nature was still there when his mother kissed his forehead goodnight, when his father glanced at him when he wasn't being a bother. It was so easy to ignore the faults when you chased something, anything that would indicate that yes, they cared about him. He loved his mother. He loved her so much, but it wasn't enough.
Love wasn't the law.
He went out often, heard the robins chirp above him, and sat in a park under a willow tree that had short leaves. The tree itself was young, yet to have its glory and big leaves, which would dance in the wind. He would read a book he had gotten from the library, its sides torn and the cover's colours faded.
One day, a boy approached him and he had a big smile on his face.

Damian sniffs pretentiously as Dick starts up the car and gets them on the road, the reprimand already on his tongue. “Don’t be foolish, Richard, you have mastered a number of languages and are perfectly capable of speaking them as they were intended to be spoken, as I do. Making excuses as such is undignified.”
Dick hums, amused. “I think there was actually a compliment in there. You’re getting soft, baby bat.”
Damian’s scandalized face is exactly as Dick pictured it. “I am not!”
…Bruce died. Bruce came back to life. The months between those moments don’t stop meaning something even if it would be easier if they did.
It’s up to Dick to reassemble his life and find a way to be a brother to the boy he considers his kid. It shouldn’t be a problem (except that it is) and where the hell is his sweater??

Love alone wasn’t enough, had never been enough, would never be enough. If it were, then Dick wouldn’t have had to be dragged away, kicking and screaming, from every great loss of his life. If it were, then all of Dick’s howling grief would have meant something.

There’s an entrance to the underworld beneath Gotham City. Tim is certain that the only way to stop Batman’s rampage is to give Bruce his son back. Dick just wants a second chance with his brother. It's an old song.

“Dick turning back to help Tim adds an extra sad layer. Of course Tim blames himself. But this story is Dick discovering a new person he cares about and it turns out he was always going to have to choose Tim over the ghost of Jason.
Knowing that the stairs represent grief makes the climb so poetic. It's lighter so they can see the path ahead but that means they can see how long and grueling it is! After there's no hope of getting Jason back they just have to keep going. Let's just climb one more stair.”
Perfectly bittersweet. I want to cry. This was really well written. 10/10
