Summary
Wei Ying uses his smile and bright laughs like a folding screen, like one of Nie Huaisang's many fans, but Lan Wangji sees. He sees the network of lightning and raised skin on the boy's back, sees his smile falter with every barbed reprimand from Jiang Wanyin and the way he constantly skirts around the border of things, as if he has to constantly know the point where he is unwanted.
He looks at Wei Ying and sees a future of squandered potentials and a brightness curbed at every turn, of a life making himself less in a Sect that would always see him as a servant's son and the reflection of their own inadequacy, and he laments that Wei Ying could not seem to see that - See past the sense of debt and false belonging his so-called family had ingrained into him.
But Lan Wangji is a patient man, and he would make Wei Ying see in time. Even if it means using the insecurities of Wei Ying's own family against him.

There's a mermaid bleeding in the lifeboat.
Wei Ying stands over the mermaid on the ship deck with his thumbs hooked into his own belt, coat swung back behind him. The mermaid looks at him like he’s a particularly pathetic bug, even though Wei Ying isn’t the one laying flat-out on the deck looking like a- well. A fish out of water, basically.
Wei Ying crouches in front of him and the mermaid bares his teeth, presumably to warn him off of touching or coming closer. Wei Ying holds his hands up, but frowns severely to establish dominance.
“Hey, buddy,” He says. “It’s not my fault you decided to bleed all over a lifeboat. We need those.”

The air on his face is cold, but the blankets are a comfortable weight on his back, and there is a solid, warm presence next to him. He hasn't felt this peaceful or this safe in a long time, not since well before the Burial Mounds. He feels so safe, in fact, that he snuggles in closer and luxuriates in the comfort for a while before realizing with a start that he has no idea where he is. He opens his eyes and follows the hand in his hair up to see pale blue sleeves, broad shoulders, and a surprisingly familiar face –
"Lan Zhan?" he asks, "Where am I?"

Lan Wangji has never met a worse supervillain.
He finds this rather remarkable considering that he has, during his tenure as Hanguang-jun, fought quite a large number of villains. Certainly some of them, like Wen Ruohan’s two successors, Wen Xu and Wen Chao, lacked style, as did Su She and Jin Zixun. But what they lacked in style, each and every one of them made up for in sheer villany. Even Wang Lingjiao didn’t hesitate to kick a puppy she saw on the street.
