Summary
“I’m sorry for ruining your night.” A deep shuddering breath echoes through the woods. Steve hurts. His chest aching something awful and so tight he can’t breathe. “I’m so-” his voice breaks as does the damn holding back all his tears. Now it’s Eddie’s turn to feel his eyes burn. “I’m so sorry, Eddie. I’m sorry for everything. I never – I never wanted – I never meant things for to end up like this.”
Eddie’s brown eyes meet Steve’s hazel. Tears fill Steve’s eyes and despite everything - despite how broken Steve looks, despite how angry Eddie is, he can’t help but think he’s still so beautiful. Eddie wants to say it. Throat aching with the need to say something, anything to get Steve to stay and let him help. It hits Eddie hard that this is the first time he has ever seen Steve cry. Steve who always put on such a strong front, who hid his sadness and fear under false smiles. All the anger and fury from five minutes ago left Eddie only to be replaced by such a twisted feeling that whatever is haunting Steve won’t be stopping anytime soon, and it’s something so much bigger than he could ever imagine.

Eventually, Eddie blows out the smoke, eyes a little hazy as he grins at the ceiling.

Putting his head down for a few moments, he only looked up when he heard the soft squeak of the desk beside him.
For a moment, Eddie debated if he even wanted to bother to look. Surely, it was a mistake for someone to sit beside him, and he was expecting a taunt or insult to be thrown his way.

The kiss is brief, only a second or two, not even long enough for Steve to really register what's happening before Eddie pulls away. Steve’s frozen in place, his arms still wrapped around Eddie.
Steve blinks down at him. "What?" he says stupidly. What?
Eddie closes his eyes, a weak smile on his lips. "Something to remember me by."
"You're not dying," Steve says. It feels like his mouth isn't attached to his brain anymore; the inside of his head is a dial tone.
"Of course I am," Eddie says, eyes still closed. "I'm dying right now."
"You're not, though." His voice keeps getting higher, for some reason. "You're not going to die here."
"Spare me the pity, Harrington, I know—"
"You're literally not dying right now." His whole body is hot. Is he sweating? "You lost some blood but they didn't get deep enough—I looked—you're going to be fine."
There's a pause. "I'm going to be fine?" Eddie asks, voice also going high and thin. "You're—sure?"
"Yes."
"Fascinating. Great. Are you—could you do me a favor, then, and maybe just—leave me here anyway?"
"What?" Steve says. The dial tone gets louder. "No. Why?"
"No reason," Eddie says, voice tight.

Steve doesn't exactly care about relationships anymore. Not after Nancy broke his heart and Billy broke his face. He's bored and just going through the motions the first time it happens. Noelle asks him on Monday if he's busy that coming Friday and Steve figures why not? He takes her to the movies on Friday, takes her to bed on Saturday, and on Sunday he lets her down gently. She takes it in stride, and the next Monday it's Jocelyn at his locker. Then Ginny. Then Cami. Soon a rumor starts that Steve Harrington will accept anyone who asks him out at the beginning of the week and end their relationship after seven days of dating.
Eddie doesn't believe the rumors. After all, to say Steve Harrington would ignore the glaring asterisk of heteronormativity is just insane. But when he catches the King being tardy on a Monday he puts his theory to the test.
Suddenly Eddie has a boyfriend for the next seven days. Now he just has to not fall in love.

Steve lets out a shaky breath as he finally finds it in himself to smile genuinely and it feels so good. The pressure in his chest eases a bit and he finds that even though he wanted to tell them about this morning he can’t. He wants to feel normal just a bit longer, pretend that whatever he and Sarah talked about wasn’t that important.
He wanted to just be a guy with no clue about the future, and no pressure to find out. If only for one more day.
Or: Steve Harrington finds a child, a partner and a lover while he fights a 10 long year battle because he was never selfish enough to go after what he wants.
