Askeladd does not care about children, he doesn't care about his men, and he doesn't care about Thorfinn.
He has reasons for what he does. He always has reasons.
What he does, for Thorfinn, what he has done for Thorfinn, is practical, incidental, or necessary—nothing more than damage control. Nothing more than a investment into a soldier that does good work for him.
Every time something happens, there's always an excuse, always a reason.
Of course he would have a reason- without one- why would he do anything?
Or
Five times Askeladd wrote off something he did as some grand ploy to make Thorfinn a better fighter, or just a mistake, or something he did just for the hell of it.
One time where he has no excuse and can't just bullshit his way out of this one.

Yet, here the lad was, wobbling and soft at the edges. Walking willingly into the wolf's den. Stupid lad.

Summary
It was true, she was a lovely woman. Even if she didn't particularly care for a wife's typical duties, she was kind and strong. Easily reliable with a sense of justice. Anything he needed of her, he knew she would do her best at.
When he made her laugh it eased some of the tension always in himself. Even things that wouldn't usually be sought after, were charming from her.
She made him smile.
But... It just wouldn't be fair to her.
Even if, for now, she was deluded into thinking he'd make a decent partner, he'd disappoint eventually.
He just wasn't a good enough man.
