He'd stepped in when board members stared too long, when conversations turned to questions about your "situation," when Roman's teasing crossed from merely cruel into genuinely vicious. You'd never quite understood the source of it. Pity, maybe. Or some recognition of a fellow broken thing, someone else who'd been shaped by forces they couldn't control.
"Speaking of." You said, as Roman's distinctive laugh cut through the ambient chatter—a sound like breaking glass wrapped in hundred-dollar bills.
Roman was holding court near the bar, surrounded by a cluster of junior executives who laughed at his jokes with the desperate enthusiasm of people who knew their careers depended on it. He'd abandoned his jacket somewhere, sleeves rolled up to reveal forearms that seemed to exist in a permanent state of casual insolence. When he caught you looking, his grin widened, and he mimed a little wave with his fingers—a gesture that managed to be both mocking and oddly intimate.

For a while, this is as close as they get to any sort of argument: Zoro growling at him like a rabid dog, deadlocked into a staring contest that Mihawk, for the first time, might actually lose.
Perona finally breaks the silence. "Urgh! I've had it with you--emotionally constipated sword freaks!" she fumes with a petulant stomp of her cherry boots. "Fine! If you two won’t talk about it, then I’ll do it for you!" She extends her hands. "Negative Hollow!"
Twin translucent specters erupt from her palms. Mihawk effortlessly swats away the pest -- but Zoro, only halfway to his mastery of haki and ambushed from his freshly-carved blind spot, is not quite so fortunate.
Zoro crumples to his hands and knees. “I don't deserve to have you as my father.”
Perona gasps. Zoro petrifies, and Mihawk thinks, distantly, that this is what it would feel like to take a sword to the chest.
“As your what?”

Summary
