Will looks down at the sheet, fingers worrying the edge. “I thought we were being careful. Taking our time.”
Mike swallows. “I thought I was too.” He lets out a small, sad breath. “I was wrong.”
Will looks back up. “So what are you saying?”
Mike’s chest tightens. This is it. The place where he either steps back—or finally names the truth.
“I’m saying I need something to change,” he says. “Or I’m going to break.”
The words hang there, bare and undeniable.
Will’s eyes flicker. “I don’t know if I can give you what you’re asking for. Not yet.”
Mike nods. He’d known this answer was possible. Knowing doesn’t make it hurt less. It reminds him of the same words he said in that coffee shop three years ago.OR: A post-canon, slow-burn Byler story about growing up unevenly, loving at the wrong time, and finding your way back to each other once you’ve learned how to stay.

Summary
Mike hates this time of year.
The leaves have all fallen, covering the ground like puzzle pieces in their rightful places, so the trees are bare, naked, and dead. It hasn’t yet snowed to round out the rugged edges of the town; there are still sharp edges everywhere Mike looks — and trust him, he looks — and it feels like the atmosphere is eternally toying with him by turning dark with rumbling clouds, only to dissipate within an hour. It also gets dark at four p.m. for no reason other than to piss him off.
The world is, Mike decides, no better now than it was when it was ending.
mike's been living in hawkins since the world stopped ending, even though his friends left him behind.

Summary
Mike returned his gaze to the gate when the attendant opened the doors and people started pouring out, on the eye out for that familiar brown bowl cut. He only realised how stupid that was when he spotted his best friend, sporting a much needed updated do and a beaming smile when he noticed his friends and family.
Mike was moments from jumping from his seat to run over and greet Will when he hesitated as his best friend turned to the man beside him and said something in his ear. The unfamiliar guy smiled and nodded, taking Wills carry on, leaving Will free to bound over to them unencumbered.
Mikes falter meant Mrs Byers was the first to hug Will, wrapping him tightly in her arms as Will ducked down to fit, even though he had intended to be the one. Instead Mike was left standing awkwardly to the side of the pair, waiting impatiently to greet him, with a few confused looks thrown to the man who had walked closer to the group.

“No, don’t apologise, I love you!” There is no mistaking the snort Max lets out, or the way Lucas and El both pat Dustin’s back as he laughs and then pretends to wheeze. Will goes wide-eyed, the blush from before rising up his neck at an alarming rate, matching his own face. Mike wants to die.
“It,” he scrambles to fix, “I love it. Your art. They’re, uh, great. Very lovable. I’m a big fan.” He decides he should just stop talking.”

“You’re thinking,” Will says, skating a finger down the line of Mike’s nose, under his eye, over his cheekbone, then resting, finally, just at the corner of his lips– “about me.”
Oh, Jesus. Mike’s throat is very, very dry. “What?”
Will opens his eyes – slow, a little hesitant – and smiles. “You are,” he says, way, way too smug for Mike’s liking. “You’re turning red!”
“Shut up,” Mike mutters, and Will’s smile grows. “You– I’m just nervous!”
It should be illegal for someone to look this pleased with themselves. “Yeah?” Will says quietly, index finger still hovering at the corner of Mike’s mouth, thumb pressed gently under his chin. “I make you nervous?”
Mike thinks Will might be psychic. (Kind of.) Will is being very irritatingly vague about the whole thing.

“Anything.” The response is embarrassingly immediate. “Everything. I don’t know. I missed you.”

Will squinted at Mike’s figure in his dim bedroom, moonlight floating in lazily through the open window. The open window that was supposed to make it cooler, damn it, but instead it just let in the bugs that usually buzzed around during Midwestern summers.
“It’s ‘cause I’m in here,” Will whispered, almost a trigger reaction at this point, because flirty banter had been something he’d grown accustomed to in California, and he was still learning to tone it down when he was with Mike.

“Sure you don’t want to play, Mike?” asks an out-of-breath Will before he drinks from a water bottle he brought.
“I’m fine,” he mumbles.
“He’d probably trip on his shoelaces anyway,” Lucas laughs, barely out of breath, drinking from the bottle Will handed him.
Mike hears Max scoff at his side and Lucas shoots her the biggest smile he can probably ever put on his face before he reaches her to kiss her cheek, and Mike rolls his eyes internally before Will comes a little closer, leaning towards him.
“You ok?”
“Yeah, sure.” And when Will obviously shows that he doesn’t believe him he adds: “Just a little bored I guess.”
He barely sees the hurt in his best friend’s eyes before he turns to Dustin.
“He’s thinking too much.”
“What about?” Will asks, but he keeps his gaze on Mike.
“I don’t know, it’s just annoying.”Or, three months after everything, the Party tries to move on and figure out what to do next while it’s sunny outside, but not in their mind.
