“Distressed? I’m more than distressed. I’m so, ugh! He’s just, I can’t. Ah! This guy is so ughhh.” Illuga groaned again, louder and more guttural.
“I didn’t quite catch that, Young Master.” The amused smile on Flins’ face was evident in his voice despite Illuga’s eyes being squeezed shut, the heels of his hands pressed deeply into them. “Could you repeat it? A little slower this time.”
The younger Lightkeeper let out a long exhale. “It’s this knight. He’s just, ugh, I don’t even know how to describe him. Loud, abrasive, overenthusiastic, eccentric, rude, batshit fucking insane.”
At the Grandmaster's suggestion, Illuga and Lohen were paired up to work together to strengthen the alliance between their factions, but Lohen was, in the mildest terms, a bit of a handful. At least Illuga had a comforting (and nosy) boyfriend who could secretly tag along on their shared patrol.

Summary
It’s become a nightly routine of theirs that’s shaped itself over the years spent in Nod-Krai. Every time Lohen returns to Favonius Keep from a fight, Varka is waiting for him in his tent, with a first-aid kit ready to be used.
What comes next plays out exactly as it always does. Varka removes his gauntlet, then pulls on the glove on his other hand, leaving his hands bare. Lohen observes Varka, how deliberate he is in each and every movement, his eyes trailing along the lines and curves of Varka’s hands as he washes them, drying them with a clean cloth, before opening the first-aid kit.
Lohen has long stopped commenting on how unnecessary Varka’s attention is, in these moments. He’s made his promise: to always come back in one piece to him. However, it’s instinctual for Lohen to open his mouth, a request for Varka to speed it up, but no words come out — it feels wrong to break this encompassing calm surrounding them.

Varka smiled down at Lohen sadly. “Then why do you keep such tight constraints on yourself? Tell me, Lohen, for I cannot fathom how someone as strong as you sees themselves as… deserving of punishment despite having shown incredible strength against an enemy that I can swear on my honor that neither I could win against.”
“It’s different,” Lohen began, but his words felt hollow. He repeated, “It’s different.”
“How?”
Lohen could feel the same frustration clawing at his skin when his parents would berate him for going out and coming back bloody. It was something that was wired innately into his being. He needed a stimulus that proved that he wasn’t someone who could be easily stepped over.
“How?” Varka asked again.
Lohen opened his mouth, and it felt as though his tongue had gone dry. He sniffled before turning his head away. “It just is, I don’t know.”
“If you don’t know, then will you let me make the decision for you?” Varka asked.

The door swings open, heavy footsteps meeting the floor underneath. He doesn't look up to see who it is, he doesn't have to. A weight drops beside him, a silent but comforting presence all the same. Neither say anything, not immediately. They simply find something to stare at, their breaths the only sounds they make. There was a time where he hated how well it seemed the Grand Master could read him, believing it to be an opening for control to be taken from him. But now? He finds himself grateful for it, even extends some trust with it.
"Well," he finally breaks the silence, figuring he might as well do it first. Get in his final word before the hammer swings down. "Guess that's that then, huh?" His hand falls to his lap, limp. Varka makes no move to answer. "The great heroes defeated the big bad villain and uncovered the remains of his influence while the sinner cleaned up his mistakes." A dry laugh fills the air, his heart isn't really in it. "At least I had one last hurrah. Certainly wasn't the way I imagined it, but eh, beggars can't be choosers."

"Uh, what are you doing?" Lohen's eyes narrow as he watches Varka's every move.
Varka pauses at the question, brows knitting together, as if perplexed. "What does it look like? I'm offering you first aid," he says. "I may not be as skilled as our medics or healers, but I can at least make sure you don't bleed out all over my desk."
"And why are you doing that?" Lohen frowns some. Varka is just one of those people he thinks he'll never really understand. Again, an enigma. Shouldn't he be pushing Lohen out the door right now? Ordering him to get medical attention (not that he'd listen, even if he did)?
"Because you're refusing to see a medic," Varka answers, simple and to the point. "It's my job as the Grand Master to make sure my knights are in top shape and taken care of."
"I don't recall personally tending to your subordinate's scrapes being a part of your job description."
"Hah! So now you want to talk about job descriptions eh, Vice Captain?"

Face flushed and wet with tears, Illuga looks so completely overwhelmed. It’s obviously his first time with someone like Lohen, someone who refuses to treat him like a perfect, precious prince. He bets that everyone who has ever been so lucky as to part Illuga’s thighs has taken him with nothing but respect, showering him with affection and maybe even love. What makes Illuga so worthy of that? What makes Illuga so different from him?
Bitterness, with all the disgusting acidity of bile, surges through him. You’re just like me, and I’ll prove it to you. I’ll tear you apart, feather by feather, if that’s what it takes. I’ll set you free, little bird.
How is it possible to want to hurt someone so badly while also wanting to take away all their pain? It’s pure madness, the way Illuga makes him feel, and yet Lohen has never claimed to be anything but.

Summary
Not for the first time, Illuga thinks there must be something wrong with him. Maybe he’s been possessed by the Wild Hunt. Maybe the kuuvahki is finally getting to him; one too many mandragoras, or something like that.
Either way, there has to be a reason. Why else would Illuga keep letting Lohen into his bed? Why else would Illuga allow Lohen to use his body again and again, leaving Illuga with bruised skin, aching bones, and a weary heart?
‘Friends with benefits’ is a phrase he’s heard before, and it makes sense. The life of a Lightkeeper can be cold and lonely, so it’s only natural to seek warmth and comfort from another. But Illuga never expected to find himself in such an arrangement, if what they have can even be called that. Lohen’s rough treatment offers no benefits, and they certainly aren’t friends. Illuga doesn’t even like him.
This can’t possibly be what Flins had in mind when he suggested that Illuga take up a new hobby.
