The Breaking of the World is imminent, and the Heroes of Old are returning to Middle-earth to fight the Great Enemy one last time. Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, Legolas, and Gimli escape the burning shores of Valinor and sail for Middle-earth, while Thorin struggles to escape the spirit of Morgoth, who seems bent on possessing him, all while trying to figure out what happened to the abandoned kingdoms of Erebor and Dale. Meanwhile, Aragorn and Arwen's descendant, Ithilwen of Gondor, battles approaching old age and loneliness as she searches for whoever (or whatever) stole the ancient King's bones from his tomb. The Dagor Dagorath, the final battle to decide the fate of Arda, hangs over them all as they struggle to readjust to mortal life and reclaim lands already lost to Morgoth's Iron Shadow.
