“Viktor. I don’t think you understand,” Jayce thundered, stalking up to the chalkboard, cheeks flushed with fury. “She’s blown up four labs in two weeks. She’s dangerous.”
Maybe it was the fact he hadn’t slept in those two weeks. Maybe it was the exhaustion at having to defend the Zaunites, to defend himself, to kneel before those Pilties and prove he is worthy.
Or maybe it was because Jayce’s hair looked so much better ruffled up.
Whatever it was- Viktor snapped.
He moved too fast to register any thought, and before he knew it he had Jayce pinned up by the neck against the blackboard, Jayce’s eyes wide and his chest heaving.
Well. In for a penny, in for a pound.
“I think I understand plenty. I understand you think Jinx is dangerous because she is from the undercity.” His hands tightened slightly around Jayce’s throat, and he was ashamed to feel a thrill run through him when Jayce took a struggling breath. “But I don’t understand how you can say that so easily, like you’ve forgotten who you’re talking to.”

"Go, go, go!" she called, barely waiting for the others to step through before sprinting down the platform. The train whistle blew a sharp warning, and doors were already slamming shut.
They all but threw themselves onboard. Powder nearly tripped, and Mylo yanked her forward, the force of it sending them both stumbling into the nearest corridor. A second later, the train jolted forward, and the platform disappeared from view.
Panting, Vi ran a hand through her hair. "Every. Damn. Year."
Powder grinned. "Yeah, but we always make it, don’t we?"
Mylo dusted himself off. "Told you we had time."
Vi let out a grunt. "Next time, you can carry your own trunk. Now let's see if we’re lucky enough to find somewhere to sit."
“I’m sure your girlfriend saved you a seat.” Mylo teased, with an impish smile on his face.
“She’s not my- ugh!”

He could imagine a better world for himself, and simultaneously accept the hand he had been dealt, as much as he disliked it.
None of this was new—they were the facts of his life.
But after that feeling of being sated came another. Something deep, twisted, terrifying, awful. There was no evidence to support it, only a sensation across his fingers, down the back of his neck, clutching at his chest.

It’s like cat and mouse: I make them, they incinerate them … I don’t think they ever realised I had any other crystals or they’d definitely incinerate those, too.”
“Bastards,” Viktor says, seriously.
Jayce grins up at him again. “Yeah,” he says, “bastards. The whole lot.”
They look at each other oddly, both blinking. Then Jayce grins again, as though he is in on some sort of great joke that only the two of them are privy to. For the first time in a very long time, Viktor feels very aware of his mask standing between the world an his face.
Perhaps the cooling system is clogged again. He feels oddly warm.
Or: Zaunite shut-in Viktor hides in his lab and behind his mask, until a tipsy Academy drop-out stumbles into his life on a reckless gander into the Undercity. Something blooms.
