Her fingers traced the outline of the cross around her neck. Across the room, Iga finally glanced up, and they locked eyes across the distance. She nodded, once. Her mouth quirked, not quite a smile. In the two weeks she had been here, Coco had yet to see her teeth.
If Coco couldn’t hate her, she could hate the concept of her, a rival in the fight for the future of humanity. Too much was at stake for anyone to engage in a battle of ego, but Coco still felt the dangerous burn of desire, the desire to be greater, rise higher.

Benson really hated them sometimes. A lot of the time. They were living their lives like goddamn cautionary tales, and none of them even cared. He couldn't understand why these pricks lacked any shame, when shame had such a constant, painful grip on him. He'd had the sense to get sober, at least, in his twenties, which was really fucking hard to do, but what did he have to show for it? He'd just switched to Newports full-time. One addiction dulled but another sharpened, like the shitty version of a blind guy getting super hearing or whatever the fuck. He was no different from the rest of them. No career, no future, no nothing.
But then there was Bradley.

Bucky thinks of whispering to Steve during mass when he shouldn’t have been, and of kissing girls in the confessional. Churches are holy, and Nike is ancient, but Steve is Steve: first, last, and always.
“Sure you can,” Bucky replies.
Tentatively and slowly Steve outstretches his dirty hand. Bucky watches his long fingers reach, his skin pink and suddenly translucent in the sunlight. Abruptly he becomes as unreal as Nike: as endless, and as ancient. When he touches the marble fabric of her clothing he inhales, sharply. He flattens his palm there at the defiant line of her hip, and then he tilts his noble head up, and he looks to her.

Jamie gives her back to the sea when she dies, three years into their marriage, their baby still inside her. He sews her up in sailcloth with the porridge pot she brought from her mother’s house, a stone from their shared hearth, scaling knife, thimble and needle. He sails out to the deep water and lowers her into the water, weeps as she sinks into the ocean’s embrace.
He sails back to land and gives his boat to his brother. He will not return to the ocean. It is a graveyard to him now.
He finds a job in a logging camp, and for a year his feet are dry, his lips do not taste of salt.
