It’s not like Mike wanted to be put into witness protection.
Just because he’d been in the wrong place at the wrong time and witnessed an apparent assassination attempt on the district attorney of New York didn’t mean his life was at risk, too. Just because he’d been called to testify at the trial a month later didn’t mean the sniper’s buddies would target him, too.
Except then they did, and then he was, indeed, almost collateral damage.

When he arrives at the Pearson Hardman building the lights are dimmed and the floor is deserted. His feet carry him to Harvey's office even though he expects it to be empty. Because Harvey probably fled the city via helicopter or teleporter or sheer force of will. But when he approaches the office he can see that Harvey is there. He has moved the couch so that it now faces the floor to ceiling windows and Mike silently sits beside Harvey, joins him in looking down at the chaos engulfing the city below. [Apocalypse AU]

It started with one drink. Just one. Harvey had been in a rare good mood after winning a case that shouldn’t have been winnable, and Mike had been riding shotgun on the victory. The bar was expensive, the whiskey smoother than anything Mike could afford, and Harvey was smiling. Not the smirk, not the tight, professional curve of his mouth, but a real smile. Relaxed. Genuine. It should have been a red flag.
"So, you ever box?" Harvey asked, swirling the amber liquid in his glass.

Then, like divine intervention in an Armani suit, Harvey saunters by. He’s flipping through a file, eyes darting over the pages, and not once does he break stride. It’s ridiculous. It’s unfair. It’s also... an opportunity.

It sat on the corner of a case file like it had wandered there by accident, bright and obnoxiously cheerful against a sea of black text and yellow legal pad scribbles. For a second he thought it was some leftover from the mailroom, maybe something stuck to Harvey’s folder before it made its way upstairs. He turned the file slightly, expecting it to fall off.

Mike’s gaze drifted toward Harvey again.
Harvey was focused, expression sharp, one hand resting against his jaw while he read. Tie loosened slightly. Sleeves rolled just so.
An absolutely terrible idea occurred to Mike.
The thing about terrible ideas was that Mike usually experienced them the way normal people experienced sneezes. There was a brief moment where prevention might theoretically be possible, followed by immediate inevitability.
So before his brain caught up with him, Mike leaned forward and poked Harvey directly in the cheek.

Harvey nods but avoids her gaze. He figured the Bar Association would report the outcome of their meetings, that Mike had fooled Harvey and all of Pearson Hardman into thinking he was qualified when he wasn't, that Harvey had testified that he had no idea Mike was a fraud. The lie had tasted so bitter on his tongue, and he never imagined lying under oath in this way.
