Items have been going missing around the hotel. Nothing of any value or consequence - just people's personal effects. Regardless of their importance, Alastor cannot simply stand by and let somebody rob folks in his territory, right under his nose.
He sets out to catch the thief - and picks up a less than useful helper along the way in the form of one miniature monarch - but comes up empty handed. Empty handed, that is, until later that evening.
With his past racing to catch up to him things and quickly spiraling out of his control, he might find that less than useful helper has a use after all.

I was barely sobered up when Gurathin reached out over to feed to explain what had happened.
It doesn't have the fat, muscle, organs, or blood volume to handle something like this. It only has neural tissue, blood, and a few glands. What's a normal dose to you, Ratthi, is one hundred doses for it. On top of that, it doesn't have the filtration we do to quickly clear out or decompose a novel organic compound like this on its own.
My gut felt like it fell through the floor. None of this was supposed to happen. SecUnit had been there to keep me safe and I'd endangered it. What can we do for it? Can't the medical center do something?
They might if it would go to the medical center, but that's not happening. There was enough in his tone to let me know they'd attempted that and failed. Right now it's trapped itself in a corner of the mall. I need to get it out of there before it gets upset. I'm going to see if I can get it back to my quarters. Security has cordoned off the area for now, but if it's still out here when the morning rush comes, we might have a very serious problem on our hands.

Summary
Aposematism in animals is designed to prevent attack. It doesn't always work, sometimes it's ineffective against some predators, sometimes it isn't. As a primary defence mechanism, Newt is a colourful individual with his blue coat and golden hair. His secondary defences aren't visible however and often are what surprise his opponents the most. Bright creatures tend to be very toxic to predators, but mammals like honey badgers are aggressively defensive. Newt is a Hufflepuff and the emblem of his house suits him well. Signalling theory tells you that Newt warns off predators and opponents with his colours, but when they don't take heed he'll show his claws and fight tooth-and-nail. It's what survivors do.
And Newt Scamander is definitely a survivor.
