There were a lot of ways for the Straw Hats to discover that the captain and navigator were in a secret relationship. The Thousand Sunny turning into a bouncy rubber funhouse of cosmic horror was the worst way possible. Especially when the side effects of the captain doing *things* to the navigator in his wackiest state leaves her behaving more like him.Series

"Then what's it about?"
Hearing those words, Nami looked away from the Sunny's figurehead to turn to the boy by her side. She saw him in the bright light of the sun; his tanned skin, his dark eyes, the straw hat on his head. There was a breath of freshness blowing in their favor. The broad white sails glinted in the sun light and the quivering forms seemed to be floating over the shallow waves.
"What's what?" she asked him back and mechanically tucked a rebellious lock of hair behind her ear.
Luffy took off his hat and sighed sullenly.
"It's not fair answering a question with another question!" he complained, peering at Nami with disappointment.
"It's not even fair interrupting a woman when she's lost in her thoughts!" the girl murmured without particular cue in her voice; her gaze was focused on the waves, which lapped slowly against the keel of the ship.
Luffy remained silent, then sat on the rail of the ship with his legs dangling over it and leaned forward to look down at her.
"It's not even fair being sad and not explaining why to your captain."

She was sleeping in his bed.
He didn't know... he wasn't sure what really happened.She made him feel uneasy, as if he wasn't... just as pure as he seemed. Sometimes he had happened to think, for no particular reason, that the reason why, in the first period, she didn't want to join him - them - was because she wasn't right. Or good or... pure? Did she once believe that he was like everyone else? That he wanted to keep her in a cage?
She was free as long as she was with him.
Here, this was the thought that troubled him. Really.
"You are MY nakama!"
Didn't he say that when he helped her? And after removing those chains, hadn't he replaced them - unconsciously, he was sure - replaced with others (more pleasant and soft) around her thin ankles, to say that she was his? He claimed her long ago. So he wanted her for himself. Wanting her free and wanting her for himself were two things that inevitably clashed with each other. For this reason, every now and then, he didn't feel comfortable.

Summary
A few moments and Nami re-emerges, the drops of water caught between her lashes. She blinks and her gaze is just for Luffy.
She has seen him through the water veil; she has recognized the ruffled silhouette of dark hair and immediately emerged to see it clearly.
"You still have the habit of breaking into the bathroom when it's busy."
And Nami knew, she knew, that Luffy could say it was her fault for leaving the door open.
"I called you but you didn't answer," Luffy says, his voice more animated than usual.
Luffy is always like that, he says things as they are. He's like a flame that burns, burns the obstacle that stops him and denies him freedom, he flares up.
Nami likes that fire, she feels all his warmth. He reassures her. She knows she can tame those flames and she won't get burned by putting her fingers close, just to follow that hypnotic dance. She knows that Luffy would never hurt her.
"And then you left the door open," Luffy adds.
