Summary
Magic is a beautiful thing. Merlin forgets that at times. It’s so easy to think of magic as something that wrecks, that ruins, that causes trouble, when that’s all he sees magic do. When those who use it fight and hurt and kill.
That’s why he was reminding himself magic can be beautiful. It can be something of life, of love, of creation.
He made flowers. They sit arranged before him. Yellow acacias, amaranth bulbs, bell flowers, yellow tulips, fennel, almond flowers, morning glories, and even sprigs of mint for decoration.

Or, following the events of the Lamia, Merlin makes the mistake of using his magic in Camelot.

Summary
“How do you know?”
Merlin looked Leon in the eyes, those eyes. . .those stormy grey eyes. Those stormy grey eyes that flashed with this unmistakable look of betrayal, hurt, and anger.
It was a look that haunted Merlin in his sleep, when he would wake up covered in sweat, tears streaming down his face. It was a different person each night, someone new to find out his inner demons, and confront him.
Those dreams usually end with him burning at the pyre.

Summary
Merlin asked in a whisper, "What was that?"
"A pheasant," Gwaine answered, bringing his sword closer with his hand.
"A pheasant?"
Gwaine nodded, his eyes focused on the dark horizon. "A very big one."
Merlin’s mood darkened as the weight of the night sank in. “You can turn back if you want,” he said, gazing into the fire. He had spent some time looking for Gwaine, but even so, he still found himself surprised that Gwaine had ever agreed to help.

Summary
Arthur didn’t think Merlin could get more annoying, but their second meeting in the marketplace proves exactly how wrong he is. Admittedly, he is quite openly antagonising the guy, but Merlin really shouldn’t be sniping back at him like this. He’s the Prince, for God’s sake, he can’t have any commoner thinking they can talk back to him however they like.
Still, he has to admit that he kind of enjoys fighting with Merlin, if only because the image of some scrawny farm boy saying he could “take Arthur apart with less than that” is objectively hilarious.
