When Mary suggests he pick up a hobby, he decides to volunteer at the local public library on Saturdays, running a literary classics (mostly 19th century) book club. Then one Saturday, a man in leather comes in looking for a book about how to grow cactuses and makes Stede feel all sorts of things that are baffling to him. His name is Ed, and he's a famous video game streamer on Twitch. Ed comes back, and back again, until they become real friends, inching ever closer to something more and helping each other grow in unexpected ways both separately and together.

“Shut the fuck up, Edward,” Izzy remarks mildly but he hears Ned’s teeth click together as his jaw snaps shut.
Izzy doesn’t use his full name unless he means business. And he’d spoken true. Ned *might* be able to get out of one of his knots, but not easily, and he hadn’t had the time or the privacy to try. So while that shut Ned’s up, it’s only briefly, but he does change the subject at least when he says lightly, “Thought you’d be eager to see me sink to the depths, songbird”
Ironically, before the leg, that name would have caused Izzy to stumble. Now, he yanks Ned around a corner and has the pleasure of seeing him be the one to stagger as he says just as mildly, “I’m trying something new.”

That night, Stede gnawed the wooden support even thinner. Then he tilted his head to one side; gripped the bottom part of it in his teeth and pulled. He felt the wood splintering, and then it snapped. As he pulled it upwards, the wire netting attached to it lifted as well, creating a gap between it and the floor. He took the netting in his teeth, grimacing at the acrid metallic taste of it, and bent it further. Eventually the gap was just big enough for him to squeeze under.
He stared at the gap in slight disbelief. Although this had been his plan all along, it was somehow only now hitting him that this was happening. His heart was beating faster and his mouth felt dry. He licked his paws and started grooming his face, which helped calm him a little.
Stede is a domestic rabbit, frustrated and bored with his monotonous life. Ed is a wild rabbit: chief of a highly successful warren, but equally frustrated and bored. When Stede escapes and makes his way to Ed’s warren they feel an immediate kinship. But then a new threat emerges and they must use all their ingenuity to save their warren from being destroyed…
