Summary
Arthur is an emotionally repressed workaholic who is unhappily married. Merlin is his loyal and competent personal assistant. One Monday, Merlin comes to work to find that, over the weekend, Arthur has dictated a letter for Merlin that is about to change both of their lives.

Merlin isn’t overly surprised when he goes blind.
Something was always going to happen. At one point he might’ve thought destiny wouldn’t let it, but if destiny gave half a shit how hard it was to appease then Merlin wouldn’t wake up with more old pains and aches than Gaius every morning. He wouldn’t have to cover his scars up with a glamour full time, despite keeping most of his skin covered. No, Merlin stopped expecting slack about the time he first killed in the name of Albion and got whipped for his incompetence the next day.
Destiny will not accept blindness as an excuse for failure, so Merlin can’t afford to, either. His purpose remains. Arthur still needs protection. This changes nothing.

Beltane is a time for celebrating new life and new births, but Merlin will be lucky to survive until the festival, since the only cure for Hanahaki is to have one’s love returned…and Arthur doesn’t love him.
