Summary
The ongoing skirmish between Lord Vetinari and the Times’ crossword compiler is well known, at least from Making Money onwards. In that book we learn that only five people in Ankh-Morpork know what a ‘pysdx’ is, namely: the Times’ crossword compiler; a Miss Grace Speaker (that selfsame crossword compiler); Lord Vetinari; Rufus Drumknott and the Curator of Ephebian Antiquities at the Royal Art Museum.
But who is to say that five people may not in fact be four, but three? And how does one fool the most perceptive man on the Disc? Unfortunately for Havelock, Lord Vetinari, he faces his greatest opponent: the only person on the Disc with the ability to breach all his carefully-crafted defences…

It started with the noises. Not the usual groans and sighs of an old house settling, but a soft, skittering rustle from under the floorboards of the kitchen. I wrote it off as a possum or a particularly ambitious squirrel in the crawlspace. I meant to call an exterminator, but life, as it does, got in the way.
Then, the crosswords began to change.
One Tuesday, I was stuck on a seven-letter word for “celestial body.” _ _ _ _ _ _ _. I had ‘P-L-A-N-E-T’ but it didn't fit. Annoyed, I gave up and tossed the paper.
The next morning, retrieving a crumpled bill I’d accidentally thrown away, I saw it. The paper was on top of the bin. Someone had filled in the empty squares. In a faint, silvery ink that seemed to shimmer under the fluorescent kitchen light, was the word: “QUASAR.”
