Crowley’s given up on coming out; left their job as wedding photographer and London behind them to get lost in a small town where they don’t know anyone. And it’s not a bad plan, as plans go, until they meet Aziraphale again.

Crowley isn't okay.
It's been 46 days since Aziraphale left, and Crowley hasn't been doing any better. It's actually all gotten worse. Now, on one particularly destructive day at his apartment, all of his usual cycles of ringing his misery out to the world haven't relieved any of the feelings that he's drowning in, and a thermos 1/4ths still-full of holy water feels like the only way out. At least it'll make a point.

Summary
The butterfly effect works in mysterious ways. One slight change in the timeline leads to a cascade of effects that can drastically shift the world. In this world, one angel's upset over the news over their creation leads to another becoming curious, defensive, and argumentative. One fell during the Great War, while the other did not.
The Cupid Aziraphale (originally written in The Plan to be promoted to Principality) fell during the Great War and became a demon. Dubbing the name Ashtaroth, he escapes up to the surface in order to avoid the budding bureaucracy and forge his own path.
The Seraph Umabel (originally written in The Plan to fall and become as the infamous demon known as Crowley) remained in heaven, much to the dismay of their superiors. Sent down to stay on Earth with no return date in sight, they are left to their own devices and have to fend for themselves.
Even if the timeline shifted just a bit to the left, in every universe, they find each other.

After Aziraphale leaves, Crowley sleeps, removing himself from the machinations of Heaven, Hell, Supreme Archangels, and the Second Coming. Aziraphale eventually starts visiting him and they, against all good sense and reason, begin to fall into bed with one another.
When the world ends, all that's left is each other, and the remnants of what they once had.
