When Dib finally managed to capture Zim, in one of Zim's own simulations at that, he expected to be lauded as one of the SEN's best investigators. Instead, he's kicked out for being to boring. On top of that, now able to watch Zim in the simulation, Dib realizes the poor bug is very lonely.
Dropping into the simulation - just to make sure everything is running correctly! - couldn't hurt, right?

With a lack of technological progression lately, the Tallest decide that they'll send the low-preforming scientist to Earth, where at best he will return with some much-needed volatile weaponry, and at worst he'll be blown to bits by the rogue invader who has been mysteriously radio silent for years.

When Dib was 15 Zim suddenly vanished and it left a hole in his life. Some of that was filled when his father gifted him with a clone daughter. Dib loved his daughter dearly and she him. She became his reason to continue living, but still that hole remained.
However! That didn't mean he appreciated both he and his daughter being suddenly kidnapped by Zim with the intention of having them join the Resisty, even if it made all his childhood dreams come true.
